Appropriate punishment?

My son is four and he needs a lot of sleep. If he doesn't get a nap, he's HORRIBLE. Of course he doesn't ever want to take a nap, but he feels much better after. Well, every time I put him down for a nap I tell him that he has to go to sleep and not play in his room. Today has been an exciting day, so I could tell he was having a hard time relaxing and falling asleep. I could hear him playing, but chose to cut him some slack. Well, our neighbors are really loud and they came home and made a bunch of noise. Asher saw this as his opportunity to pretend to be woken up after only like 45 minutes, so he started crying. Keep in mind, he's been playing in there the whole time. So I go in there and say, "Asher. I know you haven't been asleep, so I know that they didn't wake you up. I understand that you're having a hard time sleeping, but you need to stay and bed and rest for a little while longer." So he says "OH! But mommy... I peed in the bed! I have to get up!"

So. He used his bladder to manipulate me into getting to get out of bed. I asked him straight up, "Son, I KNOW you weren't asleep. WHY didn't you get up and go to the bathroom?" And he told me the truth, that he thought if he peed in the bed then he'd be able to get up and play.

Now, I don't punish for accidents, obviously, but what do you do when your kid intentionally tries to manipulate you like this? He knows better. He even admitted he knew better!

So far, I'm thinking that he won't be able to sleep with his "pets" for a week. That's usually the reason he's playing and not sleeping... nap time and night time. He's talking to his stuffed animals.

I mean, his animals wouldnt want him to pee on them!

Very much so. I would do the same in addition to taking his tv time away.

I wouldn't take away all his comfort items

I think that is an appropriate punishment.

He's not extremely attached to any of them, honestly. It's not like Linus and his blanket, or anything. He doesn't HAVE to have them to sleep.

Oh okay. Then I think that is appropriate.

Revoking a privilege is legitimately the most effective punishment.

Honestly, I probably wouldn't have given him any "punishment." Just not my style of parenting. I would have had him help me change the sheets and his clothes, put a blanket over his bed so that he could lay back down and finish his nap. And obviously talk to him about how what he did was wrong. Since I couldn't force him to sleep I would just keep him in his room for what would be an appropriate length nap if he were sleeping.

That is an appropriate punishment for intentionally peeing in his bed.

However, he is 4 years old. Why is he still having naps? (Just curious)

Most four year olds take naps.

Really? I thought most stopped taking naps around that age because of kindergarten or pre-k. Getting them prepared for long days.

Because he needs one. He gets horribly cranky if he doesn't have one. I don't think four is too old for a nap... In fact, I think most five year olds need naps. They don't get them a lot of times because of school, but I definitely think they would be beneficial.
