Exactly. There is no need for ANYONE outside of the military to have assault weapons.

The military doesn't even use the weapons that the media are labeling "assault weapons" lol They are different and have different features. Might look big and scary but.. not the same weapons.

Yea, damn that stupid unfounded fear of mass killings
crazy, paranoid Americans

and you did not answer the question.
You do not find assault rifles a risk b/c they were not used in Columbine?

I am also very curious to know what purpose your "friends" have there guns for. Truly curious.

I did answer. You overlooked it.

"In their duffle bags were pipe bombs. The two also had a 9-mm semi-automatic handgun, a 12-gauge double-barrel sawed-off shotgun, 9-mm carbine rifle and a 12-gauge pump sawed-off shotgun. Black trenchcoats hid the weapons and utility belts full of ammunition. They also carried knives.
Their toll on that day was twelve students, one teacher, and the two murderers dead; plus 21 more were injured.

It seems that the Federal Assault Weapons ban in place during this time period didn’t help the high school students and teacher at Columbine, because, obviously, other weapons can still be used to kill if that’s the intent!"
^ right there.

SHOOTINGS HAPPEN REGARDLESS OF "ASSAULT WEAPONS."

I honestly think this is an issue with mental health and NOT with guns. There were signs these people had mental issues.. nothing really done about it.
I don't feel banning assault weapons is the answer.

That doesn't really answer the question. Why do citizens need certain weapons that could take out dozens of people in less than three minutes? Why? And especially when those citizens who have mental health problems? It is a recipe for disaster.

You do have a point. I don't believe banning these types of guns will solve all the problems.

I think it's a combination...

Yes, people are going to hurt people, no matter what. We're animals.

But I think the availability, paranoia, and gun culture contributes to it. Along with our extremely (IMO) ill society, in general.

"Guns don't kill people, people do."

Not to make light of it, but, to quote my favorite comedian, "The NRA says that guns don't kill people, people do. But... I think the gun helps. Just standing there going, 'BANG!' ...that's not gonna kill too many people."

Or, rather, "guns don't kill people, people do. Or a monkey (if they have a gun)."

So... long story short... I can see both sides of this argument, and understand both. But until we figure out a way to heal our cultural attitudes and society... I fall on the side of gun control. Too many people with too many guns... though, I think, in general, there just needs to be more accountability with how people handle and keep track of their weapons.

While I certainly agree that there is a huge mental health crisis in the US, I also feel until it can be rectified, access to assault rifles should be very limited.

Lets face it, health care is a mess and it's not going to change overnight.

If gun owners were all responsible and took measures to ensure their weapons could not fall into the hands of wacko's, I would not have an issue with them at all. But the fact is, alot of gun owners become complacent with familiarity.
Sucks for the people that are truly responsible, but such is human nature.

and I find it incredibly short sighted to discount the danger of assault weapons based on one school shooting that happened 15 or so years ago. Thats just ignorant.

Of course people are going to kill if they are nuts and have it in mind to do so.
Why is it so horrible to attempt to minimize the potential victims until the true issue can be addressed and corrected?

You are right. THIS is the issue that needs to be addressed and worked on. Mental health. All these shooters recentally showed signs of having mental health issues and nothing was really done.
I believe the answer should be more toward our mental health system and the way things are done and reported.
Not banning "assault weapons"

I never claimed it was the complete answer, but it certainly is a portion of it.

I am going to go out on a limb here and say that the majority of the gun crime in Chicago is not perpetrated by the law-abiding, legal gun owners. So that sentence is pointless.
