Parents of leukemia patients--please respond!!!

posted 5th Feb
My son has ALL and had his 4th central line implanted today--a port. I don't remember if he had a fever after getting the others done, but he has a fever of 100.8 right now and it started about 2 hours ago. I'm wondering if it's normal to have a low-grade fever after getting a port placed?

Any and all information is appreciated if you've had experience with this. Thank you!!

Thank you. It has been the most difficult thing we've ever been through. Today has been especially tough.

I dont have a kid with leukemia, but a fever after placing a central line isnt a good thing. your doctor should have explained to you what to look for and when to call.

They explained that we need to call if the fever hits 101.4, but I'm just worried. He has been sleeping since we got home, which was about 4-ish hours ago. I understand that the anesthesia can really knock people out, but I'm a worrier by nature.

You should call, it could be a sign of early infection. I'm sorry mama

I just called and the doctor said that it is not uncommon to spike a low-grade fever within 24 hours after surgery and the anesthesia itself can sometimes cause it. She said to keep a close watch and if it goes above 101, we have to take him in to get blood cultures done. I'm praying that it doesn't go any higher. This is heartbreaking.

his fever is under 101.4? That's still really low and "normal" -- I'd let him sleep through the night, and check him every few hours if its going up.

Good luck with everything :-)

yes right now it's 99.4 because the Tylenol broke it, so I'm hoping it stays down. He's awake and eating for the first time since he got discharged so I'm hoping he'll start feeling better.
