ParaGard vs Mirena
posted 5th Feb
I want to get an IUD but can't decide which one...
Any opinions on which one to get?

My mirena got embedded, caused me a lot of hormonal issues, and so far my periods have yet to start back up, 2 months after having it removed. It sucks.
All IUDs can get embedded, perforate the uterus, get lost, etc... I would never use something that I have to stick inside my body ever again.

I don't know about the Mirena but I literally just had the Paragard remove an hour ago because it sucked. I got in in September 2012 and have done nothing but bleed since I got it. Other than that I didn't have any other side effects though.

totally depends on you and your body. I wanted one but can't do either for different reasons. The paraguard has a high rate of make you bleed alot and since I already have a clotting disorder the thought of that freaks me out but at least it wasn't hormonal. Then I thought about the mirena but it is hormonal and even though they say that it's less hormone than the pill, your body takes it in more effectively (thereby putting more in your system than with the pill) because of the location that it's in and since the pill already makes me hard to live we I didn't want to risk the mirena making me a bitch.

I got my paragard a little over 2 weeks ago and I love it so far. I bled pretty heavily for a week and a half, but since..No bleeding, no pain, nothing. I picked the Paragard because I dislike hormonal birth control and I wanted something that I could have removed and immediately start trying for a baby.

Had Mirena for 2 years. No periods the whole time. Became a raging bitch every 2 months, dropped my sex drive. I gained 25lbs.
Had it removed last April, got pregnant right away and lost the baby. Found out I was pregnant again in September, and lost that one too.

I had Mirena. I gained a lot of weight on it, but the longer I had it the lighter my periods got until they stopped (which is a pro in my book). It was also nice not having to take a pill or constantly remind myself to "do" my birth control. Just checked for the strings occasionally.
I have Paragard and recently had a miscarriage. So, as for the protection against pregnancy, not so great. But, like Mirena, it's nice not having to worry about it too much. However, it is hormone-free, so there aren't any benefits to lighter periods. In fact, it's quite the opposite. I have heavier and longer periods on it (which is slowly getting back to normal).

I'm debating between the two as well, but leaning toward Paragard again.
Mirena: good for 5 years, can lighten or even make periods cease, hormonal
Paragard: good for 10 years, can make periods heavier, non hormonal
They both seem to have the same effectiveness rate and associated risks. I am leaning toward Paragard because I would like to avoid hormones at all costs because of. Potential link between hormonal birth control and breast cancer (I am already at increased risk bc my mom had advanced breast cancer at a young age). While not having a period would be awesome, I am afraid that I would be a nervous wreck each month thinking I may be pregnant. I am not interested in another baby now or maybe ever.
Eta; I had Paragard for 5 years, decided to ttc and had it removed last January. I got pregnant in May and recently gave birth to a perfect little boy.

after i had my son i breastfed so the only option for me that would be very effective was the IUD so i chose paragard because its hormonal free. it hurt from the moment they put it in and i tryed to adjust to it for a month and my SO could feel it even when they cut the strings to the lowest possible length. then one morning i woke up to a pool of blood the size of a frying pan soaked thru my sheets and had to be rushed to the ER because i was having contractions so bad it felt like i was in labor so they removed it and i got on the pill! I wouldnt recommend an IUD but thats just me. Everyone's different.

I have paragard (I've had it for almost 2 years) and I really like it. No crazy side effects because it has no hormones. My periods were a little heavier for the first few months, but now they're not bad at all. It also lasts for 10 years which is longer than mirena.

I've got Mirena. I've had it for almost a year now and I've almost completely stopped my periods. I lightly bleed once every two months. You need to do the research and talk to your doctor because Mirena DOES have serious side effects and if you're susceptible to them, then Mirena is not for you. But if it works for you, then it can be amazing.

I have Mirena and I honestly like it. Period is pretty much non-existent, and I honestly think it helped my moods. I'm more easy-going and less prone to freaking out. And in a bit of TMI, it improved my sex life and I last longer in bed. Lol.
However.
The first 4-6 weeks while my body adjusted were hell. I thought about yanking it out. Awful back pain and for that period of time I had moments of irrational anger. But now that my body has adjusted, it's great.

I have paragard for the 2nd time (first after my DD was born, had it removed and conceived my DS within 2 months) and I have had no problems. No heavy bleeding, normal periods, etc.
