Postpartum weight gain

posted 5th Feb
My baby girl was born Nov 30th after a healthy pregnancy during which I gained 30 lbs. After delievery, I continued to lose weight steadily for about 5 weeks and was nearly back down to my prepregnancy weight, but then something weird happened. I stopped losing and started gaining... I'm breastfeeding and eating healthy, my diet has not changed - consume 1350-1450 calories a day - and I'm active because besides my new LO I have 5 other children (my oldest is  . I've literally gained inches around my thighs, hips, and upper arms. (example, 4 wks PP my thigh measurement was 24", right now each are up to 25 1/2"). I took a preg test, negative. I haven't menstrated yet. I have no idea what could be causing this rapid weight gain, or how to stop it! I'm ballooning up and there's no way I could eat any less or 'diet' more strictly (I hate diets!). Advice??

Just continue to exercise. I gained 20lbs after I had my son (I was breastfeeding as well) and most of it fell off after I was 5 months PP.

Exercise would be the main thing I would guess. I know after I had my last I lost all but 2 lbs but then I ended up putting on 4 more after a while. I wasn't doing anything different diet wise but I wasn't exercising either. I still haven't been doing it really and I need to.

ups and downs are normal. first off, I would stop the measuring and maybe stop the calorie counting. make sure you eat breakfast and have lunch as your main meal of the day. eat a light dinner and in between those 3, try to have some healthy snacks (like carrot sticks or pretzels, for example). drink lots of water. cut out all soda and minimize your juices.

then, just give it some time. as they say 9 months on, 9 months off. If you think it's a medical issue, talk to your dr or OB, but so far that all sounds pretty normal. In fact, it sounds like you might not be eating ENOUGH and your body has slowed it's metabolism to try and hold onto as much as possible since you are nursing and need more calories. having frequent smaller meals, should help your metabolism. =D
