WTF is this?

I have had this thing on my nail for a couple of weeks now. It doesn't hurt but I'd like it to go away. Any ideas?

Not that I remember.

Looks like your finger got smashed or the nail was damaged somehow. It will probably have to grow out.

You could have smashed it in your sleep. I've done that plenty of times, before.   It'll have to grow out...

I can live with that. I was afraid it was something serious or some kind of infection.
