Arizona renters right question

Does anyone know what a landlord can and can not say in a reference.

Like last year when we moved in we got bedbugs, never had them before didnt use a moving truck or anything, no new furniture, well they blamed us made us pay and everything..
so we are moving out and a prespective landlord called them to see if we are good tenets and if we have ever been late on rent, well they told them that we had bedbugs. can they do that?

I am, we dont have them anymore, and ive gotten to the point where im about to get a lawyer, I dont think it was my responsibility to pay, and forthem to say something after the fact

Yes, they can disclose pests, damages, neighbor complaints, and payment history.
