Housing question

posted 5th Feb
I live in a second story apartment. We have a balcony in lieu of a back yard. I noticed (while my son and I were outside playing) that some of the slats on my balcony are far enough apart that my son can easily fit between them (three spots in total). The only reason I never noticed before is because my son started walking when it was too cold to be outside, so we didn't start going on the balcony until the last few days. I called housing to see if maybe they would fix it because it's a definite safety issue. They told me, "You can buy lattice from us, but we won't fix it because if we put new slats in and they fall out, we could be held liable."

Dafuq?? Wouldn't they be liable if it's a safety issue anyway?

slats on the part you walk on or the part around the railing? There is rules to how many inches they can be apart.

I think here they would have to fix it in order to pass an inspection. Pretty sure. That's stupid that they want to charge you to fix it..I would look into your local laws and see if they would fail a safety inspection.

Around the railing. My son thinks he's Ezio, so he is always doing the leap of faith off of things and I really don't want my balcony to be one of them

Fort Irwin housing is all messed up. They won't really fix anything like that. The wood in our back yard is broken but I'm sure they won't fix it. Did you call the housing office or the maintenance line?

I called maintenance and my husband went to housing. It's ridiculous. Half the crap that needed to be done when we moved in was stuff I had to fight them on, including having our sparking outlets fixed   This was seriously the worst place to have a first duty station lol

This Is our second duty station. We were at Carson first and I promise not all places are this smurffy lol. This house was filthy when we moved in and they wouldn't clean it. I hate this place lol.

Get the cheap green mesh garden fencing at home depot and put it on with zip ties. I did this at my last place and it worked great!

That's what I'm going to do. My husband is already in Barstow picking stuff up. Sad to say that I'M the handyman of the house lol...so that means I'll have to put it up haha

I didn't think so. I have been told that I'm unlucky getting this place first, but maybe it'll make me appreciate the other posts we end up at lol

It's really easy. You can use a staple gun to make it even more secure between slats.

Not that anyone is still watching, but I just found that there can be no more than 4 inches between the slats...which means more than half of mine are spaced too far apart -_-

I would let whoevers in charge know and that you will call whoever it is you would call an turn them in if they don't fix it. That's a huge liability for them if your LO falls and gets hurt.
