If you trust that midwifes judgement and she says you are fine, how would you argue? what information would you have to base this choise on other then what she tells you? What if she made you feel like smurf for wanting to go in and essentially called you a pussy for wanting inerventions? YOu have no clue how you would respond. You are very vulnerable and completly at the mercy of ONE person. In the hospital you have multiple people to ask opinions of and gather data from. there is also undeniable evidence of factual data (FHT strips and vital signs) that one can say "I am seeing X on the babies tracing and that typically indicates Y. My recommendation is Z, but here are your other options" The midwife at home is doing her own assessment and there isn't anything that independantly records that data and can be referred back to. One literally has to take her word for it.

but see this is what home birth advocates do. If it goes well and everything turns out positive, then it's cuz the midwife rocked and medical intervention is the devil. If it turns out bad, then it's the mother and her family didn't trust instincts enough, should have defied the midwife and fled to a hospital against her advice or etc. Or they have to endure shaming for taking a stand and wanting to go in and have evil medical interventions and following the birth feel guilty and powerless... something midwives and home birth are touted to foster. Its an ass backwards way of doing things.

Sorry I have been in the hospital with my daughter otherwise I would have replied sooner. Like I said I always go with my instincts they have never been wrong. If I felt I needed to go to a hospital I wouldn't take any body's word against my feeling that I need to go. I don't rely on anybody to tell me that everything is okay including doctor's. Hell a doctor almost smurfing killed me when I was in 8th grade beacuse I was making up that I was having severe pain just to get pain meds when in reality my gall bladder was about to explode.

that's great for you, but realize that the MAJORITY of people out there are NOT like that. You also do not know how you would respond in a situation if you were actually living it, especially if your instincts were wrong and telling you everything was ok, because you were hoping that it was

You know I've been in a situation where I disagree with providers and I trust myself, but, hospital or no, it IS hard to stand up for yourself when you're met with someone who won't listen to you---

THIS is why it is VITAL to interview, screen, check up on, and otherwise get to know your midwife and talk about ALL possibilities and how you want them handled BEFORE YOU ARE IN LABOR!!!

Many of the botched home births are with poorly qualified midwives or midwives with a poor history, so checking up on them is absolutely key!

I never hope something isokay....I just go with the flow. I know my body pretty well to know if something is going wrong or not. And if my instincts were wrong...oh well that is part of life. Same things could happen in the hospital. Hospitals can kill people/babies too ya know.

this is why there's so many csections now though. So many drs are held responsible for babies deaths during Hospital births that they just go in for a csection at any disturbance because they just don't want to take any risk. The drs I have seen I trust enough to know they're not just out to do unnecessary csections for money. They just have to avoid any risk of lawsuit. I know it sucks but I can definitely see their point of view.
