third trimester amnio

posted 4th Feb
I'll be 37 weeks tomorrow and my doc wants me to have an amnio done Wednesday. They would like to check fetal lung maturity. I really don't want to go through this and don't think it is necessary st this point. Has anyone dealt with this and can share their experiences? Was it painful and how w soon did you deliver afterward?

Is there a specific reason your doc wants to do this? Normally, they don't just test for lung maturity unless there's a need to, such as preterm labor, or if it seems as if your baby NEEDS to be delivered.

I was supposed to have one done but it got cancelled, however I did have two friends that got theirs done (pregnancy complications) and they both came back inconclusive.

At the suggestion of my cardiologist, they'd like to go ahead and induce. I'm havin complications from my graves disease etc. My ob didn't mention athing art my last appt, I just happened to receive a call from the guys scheduling it. All they could tell me is due to lung maturity check.

We had one done to decide if delivery at 37 weeks would be safe. I'd had an extremely complicated pregnancy and delivery was discussed literally weekly from 27 weeks on, on the basis that if they could just get her out alive, she could be monitored (there's a thread giving more details in my profile if you feel you need them.)

It was determined because of this amnio that her lungs were not yet ready but would be soon - It can give an approximate number of days needed to mature. We waited a few days (delivery was originally scheduled for Aug 17th and was rescheduled for Aug 21st based on the test) and delivered.

It hurt some but wasn't painful, it caused no problems. It was the second amnio we had that pregnancy - the first being for genetics.

I wish they'd cancel mine!! I only have about three weeks left. If end up hospitalized again, then in fine with induction etc. If not I'd rather wait till mu baby's ready to come on his own

Aah. That makes sense. I have had, not an amnio per se, but amniotic fluid drawn out, and that's not what sends you into labor. It doesn't hurt really. Good luck to you!

It doesn't hurt, it just feels weird. I had two done for the same reason.

I had one with my DS when he was 35 weeks and he was delivered at 36 weeks.. It felt like getting a shot but it wasn't too bad. They checked it for the lung development for him as well because I had complications with my BP and preeclampsia. Good luck!!
