5 Year Olds Cage Fighting

posted 4th Feb
Watching HLN this morning, they did a story on 5 year olds cage fighting. They said that when interviewed, most parents said this was disgusting and outrageous. However, online, most parents said they saw nothing wrong with it because it is just a sport and it's good excersize. I find this a bit hard to believe that so many parents would be okay with this. They are MUCH healthier ways for a 5 year old to get active, and even though I would never approve of my children doing this at all, I can understand kids as they get to junior high age and above doing wrestling, kickboxing, ect. and perhaps even in high school I would not be shocked. What are your opinions on the matter of children as young as 5 cage fighting?

I wouldnt want my five year old to do that, they have horrible control and discipline whats to keep them from inflicting serious damage? There are plenty of sports to let out that wild side.

If i had a child with excessive rage issues and I was trying to channel that into an appropriate venue? Maybe.

For the average 5 year old? No. There are many sports that are no-contact and involve similar actions. Wrestling would also be a good structured way for a physical contact sport.

Or Karate/Martial Arts!

Not for a 5 year old. For an older kid (middle/high school) maybe depending on thier maturity level.
eta: Also depending on if they want to do it or not.

I... Can't imagine five-year-old cage fighting. o.O
I mean, it sounds horrible, but funny at the same time because I just can't picture it seriously.

If they want to do it, i dont really see aproblem. If they dont ike it and are being forced i dont agree. But whatever.. Iwouldnt let my kid do it unless they were like really psyched about it

im all for learning tae kwon doe, etc.. teaching discipline and self defense but cage fighting? i mean there is sparring at 5 that would be ok... but im not sure how their learning is with this cage fighting thing...

it might just be them learning mma. which i guess could just be another form of any other karate.
but if its like some fight club smurf.. come on now. lol poor kids.

Well one thing about MMA is that it is MMA. Meaning, they would HAVE to learn at least two forms of martial arts before starting MMA style cage fights, ya know? And it makes so much more sense for a 5 year old to be in karate or similar as opposed to getting into a cage and just trying to punch the other kid in the face. There's no discipline in that, at least, not the kind a 5 year old would understand. I think it's much better to reserve that kind of sport until they are at least teens.

oh i def agree.
i was just throwing an option out there. lol
my daughter will only be in tae kwon doe/hap ki do with my uncle. no one else and no other form or martial arts.(if im smurfing out the spelling bare with me lol)
if i was back home she would be starting in a few months when she turns 4 and she will be in it til shes older. and only if she completely begged to quit or hated it would i let her quit (shed get to do what she wanted to also.. probably ballet or something).. and even then i would be iffy about it. its important to know self defense and i know at 4 its not really needed.. but i would just rather be safe than sorry. :/

I think that's great! My Mom never let me do karate as a kid, she always said it was too violent, lol. DH doesn't want the kids doing anything violent, but I'm not opposed to things like that. I see where he's coming from but I disagree. I won't put the kids in unless they come and ask, and I guess if it comes to it DH and I will have to have a serious discussion about it, lol, I just don't see how simple self defense is bad as long as it's abundantly clear that it's not an okay to go starting fights and it's major reason is for excersize and self defense if it's really necessary.
