I have recently been diagnosed with PCOS. I'm still new with all of this....my doctor put me on Metformin 500 mg twice a day. Will taking this help me get pregnant? TIA

It's different for everyone. It's worked for me both pregnancies (I also have PCOS & Insulin Resistance) but some ladies don't benefit from it. Check out SoulCysters.net for lots of info on PCOS   best of luck

That is a diabetic medication.. It can help you if you are insulin resistant which is pre-diabetic. Are you overweight? Have irregular to no periods? Try losing 10% of your body weight, and a low GI diet.

It depends. Pcos has varying degrees of how bad it is from person to person. I was on metformin and BC pill to help regulate me, was trying to not get pregnant but got pregnant twice and had two full term healthy babies. I was just recently pregnant ans miscarried last week but I was only 4 weeks along, wasnt on metformin so I figure that's why it didn't stick. Women with pcos are more likely to miscarry.

They have me on it to try and regulate my periods for now. I am taking 2000 mgs a day and this has actually been what I needed to help with my weight loss. After three days of taking it I was down 6 pounds. I always felt crazy before this trying to lose weight and doing the minimum amount of calories you need a day and still not managing to lose weight. I got to the point I gave up on weight loss because it wasn't happening and now it is! So we at least know it is helping with that. It will be some time before we find out if it is helping regulate my periods or not.

Just curious, why would you ask if she is stupid?

Because she assumes that if you are taking it you are fat. I am fat yes but I know three women who are thin and are taking it to try and get their PCOS under control and are already having enough issues with it without having people telling them that since you are taking a diabetic med that must mean you are fat.

Apparently you are stupid. If I assumed OP was fat I would of said you're fat lose weight. Instead I asked, as it is fairly common among women with PCOS. Nowhere in my post does it say metformin=fat. Anyone that has PCOS and is educated about it knows that losing 10% of your body weight can help drastically. I'm not sure why you take that so offensively.

Maybe it is how I read it.. Maybe.. probably not but maybe.
I saw..
"Are you overweight? Have irregular to no periods?"
and then..
"Try losing 10% of your body weight, and a low GI diet." except I saw that with a whole bunch of these at the end !!!!!!!!!!!! and a disgusted look because we are jumping to conclusions and assuming that since someone is taking a med meant for diabetics that must mean they are fat.

Actually, you're the only one that read it like that. PCOS usually includes a hormonal imbalance which can lead to excess weight gain, and make it feel impossible to lose weight. Hormonal imbalance also causes irregular periods. Women (not all) with PCOS usually have infrequent to no periods. Being overweight can attribute to irregular periods, hence the losing weight factor. I'm not talking out of my ass, I know what I'm talking about. Metformin can help women with PCOS regulate their hormones or lose weight which in turn can help them ovulate which is what is needed to get pregnant in the first place. That is why I suggested losing weight IF overweight. I still don't understand why you're so sensitive about the weight thing, maybe you are overweight? That's nothing to be ashamed of. There's no bashing here, never was. I was just trying to give OP other options/help.

I am overweight. 300 lb of Fat Amber waiting for her period to be over to be pounded.... Yes I did just say that. I don't like my weight but I am not ashamed of it esp since I am taking steps to lose some weight.
I do apologize though then. I compleatly misread that. I am used to people who say I don't lose weight because I am lazy which is not completely true. I can be a lazy fat ass sometimes and I did give up on losing weight at one point but now I have been renewed by the tiny weight loss I got just from being on these pills for three days.

Don't worry about it, you don't have to apologize. Weight is a common struggle for many people, most people. It's great that you're trying to lose weight and get healthier. PCOS can be a nightmare for some but the more educated you are on the matter the better you will be able to deal with it. I wish you the best of luck on your journey, and I hope you reach your goal.
