How much do I give him!?

posted 3rd Feb
I picked up some infant tylenol just a bit ago. He's running a low-grade fever. Between 98.9-99.5. The package says not to give to babies under 6 months without calling a doctor for dosage information. The doctor at the ER said I could give it to him, but...Didn't tell me how much.

How old is he and how much does he weigh? I wouldn't even medicate that "fever".

I'd call the ER and ask. Is he okay? Babies that young should be seen for a fever over 99.0 .. .he is about 5 weeks? (If I recall correctly)

Is he eating fine? Having enough wet diapers? Is it consistently that temperature? If yes,yes,&yes..id let his body work the fever off instead of suppressing it.

He has RSV so it varies. It has gotten up to 100.5, last night. He's 2 months and 9 lbs 13 oz.

I would only give medicine if the fever was above 100. That's just me though

Depends on the concentration of the tylenol.

RSV.   His temp was 98.8 at the ER earlier. But..I'm trying to check ever so often and goes away...and then comes back..and then goes away. I can tell he feels bad.

Call the hospital or after hours phone line and ask them.

Ah ok, I see now. He's still young. Uhh...let me see. You should go by weight when looking for the correct dosage. Do you, by any chance, have a nurse line that you can call? You can google the dosage for his weight but its a toss up. I found 0.4 ml for an infant at your son's weight.

Ah, I understand. Sorry.

I'd still call the ER or your doctor on call to see how much. It goes by weight, but I don't have a chart for that small of a weight.

I'm going to try and give the doctors office a call and see if it connects me to an after hours doctor.

Six Safety Tips for Acetaminophen
1. Don't give to a baby under 3 months without a doctor's approval.
2. Don't confuse infant drops with the new infant liquid. Infant drops are three times more concentrated. Learn more at www.babycenter.com/acetaminophen.
3. Always use the measuring device that comes with the medicine.
4. The proper dosage is based on weight, not age. To determine the weight of a very young child, weigh yourself and then weigh yourself while holding your child. Then subtract your weight from the combined weight.
5. Never give acetaminophen to a child who's taking other medicines unless directed by a doctor. Other medicines may also contain acetaminophen, creating a dangerous overdose.
6. Don't exceed five doses in 24 hours.

The old dosages are completely phased out I think so I would use the new dosage recommendations. It should say on the bottle if it's the new liquid. I know mine usually does, but I only use PediaCare for my son and he's 18 months.
I got that chart from babycenter.com.
