Isn't she hurting her baby?

posted 3rd Feb
I've recently befriended a neighbor of my she is a single parent and recently had a lil one. I too just recently had a child and so we click instantly. She seems to be lot of fun and her oldest child gets along with my kids. She tends to go out lot but that's none of my business. she usually have her mother watch her kids and I myself have watch them as well. Well yesterday being the super bowl weekend she and some of her friends went out to happy hour to have a few drinks she asked if i can watch the baby(who is 3 months) just for a few hours of course i didn't mind so off she went. The baby is breast feed and she give me two bottles for him to have. A few hours turned into more than a few hours, i was calling her non stop because the baby needed more milk and she wasn't answering. When she finally answered sounding overly drunk she had actually got mad at me for blowing up her phone. long story short she got to my house and grab the fussing baby out my hand sat down and began feeding him. I asked her what the hell are you doing? she said nonchalant um feeding him, apparently when she does it all the time drinking and breastfeeding. I went off on her i couldn't believe what I was seeing. She told me to mind my business and I don't have to worry about her coming by anymore. Isn't this child abuse or am I over reacting. My husband says I should just leave it alone but I don't think I can

You can drink and breastfeed still. If you're okay to drive..you're okay to nurse.

If alcohol goes into breast milk, then that's not good.

The baby sounds fine. You can still drink and breastfeed.

No, it's not child abuse and no she's not harming him. Very little alcohol transmits through breastmilk. It's not stellar parenting, granted...but nothing to freak over.

Your supposed to wait two hours after drinking, if its more than one glass. Breastfeeding right after can cause the baby to be sleepy, and cause strain on its liver. But there isnt anything you can do, except maybe print off an informational page, and the dangers, and find a way to get it to her.

Beer is actually suspected to help with breastmilk production, and calming nerves, but no more than twelve ounces if youre not going to wait to breastfeed. They make testing strips to tell how much alcohol is coming through your breastmilk.

I think the other woman probably feels she has already crossed the line by freaking out on her and her parenting decisions. Handing her information after she has already been told it was non of her business is rude.

i thought maybe one or two drinks was ok. but is it still ok if it to much where you can't drive or stand without falling. I just had hope she didn't pass out on the bed and forget to take care of the baby. If she would of been a little buzz i wouldn't have freaked out but she looked like she could barely even take care of herself.

Yes you can drink and breastfeed.
NO you can not go out get hammered with your friends then come home and breast feed if you are overly intoxicated it can transfer to your breast milk just like it goes into your blood. Which yes can cause FAS.
If she was not drunk when she came home don't let yourself be worried if she was yes when she is sober I would talk to her. As a mom who EBF for 2 years I would never get drunk then feed my baby. I would have a drink at friends then a few hours later BF though.

That may be, but maybe she is just ignorant, and doesnt know. Of course anyone would get upset if they were accused of not caring for their child properly, but what if she doesnt even know? If the friendship is already broken, why not see if shes educated on the matter?
