organ donations

posted 3rd Feb
ok , if your of legal age (not a child) , do you think that you should only be able to receive an organ if you are a donor

to me it would make more people donors if this was the case

Well it's not really going to work is it.... I mean picture the scene "Hello I'm Dr. Montgomery, you need a new liver and we have one but I'm sorry to inform you of this Miss, seeing as you never registered for organ donation yourself you can't have one. Perhaps you should have thought of that huh? Happy dying!"

but if they make it law and everyone knows then maybe it will change peoples minds about becoming a donor

I think when Goverments start making laws that people can't receive an organ to save their life when there is an organ there because they didn't register for organ donation then that is pretty messed up. Again picture the scene I said in my last comment to you, seriously you are ok with that? By law a Dr. would have to go into tell a dying woman who needed a liver that they had a liver for her but they weren't going to give her it because she hadn't herself registered for organ donation so they were going to just watch her die? You think that would be a good law?

No anyone who needs one can get one. Plus if you received a donated organ you are probably pretty sick to begin with, so you probably wouldn't be a good canidate for donating your organs anyways.

More people should donate organs, I would def want to help other people who might be saved from my organs when I die. I'm the type of person to want to help anyone I can. Its not like they are any use to me at that point anyways. I think its an urban legand when people say doctors will pull the plug & not try to save you if a more important richer person is waiting for your organs. I hear that one a lot though.

My uncle recieved a donor kidney from his mum, Shortly after our whole family signed up, it doesnt give me any more right than the next person to recieve help.
It would be nice if everyone signed up it would be nice if everyone gave blood but there are loads of reasons why people cant.

i understand that no life is more important than another , but i still think it would make the more people become donors,

what if they made it compulsory to donate , i mean there are thousands of people waiting for organs and unfortunately they will not make it due to the lack of donors ( i understand there are some religions that wont donate but they also wont be able to receive as its against their religion )

as for the doctor saying they cant help because the patient isn't a donor , if it was law then the patient would already know that they wouldn't be eligible for an organ ,

Would you want the lungs of a 50 year old 40 a day smoker? do you want the liver of an alchoholic? its not cut and dry that people should donate to recieve, its a moral issue i think, i aggree with the principal but its one that goes much deeper than the surface

Ok so let's take it put the equation that the Dr. would be the first to tell her and she would already know, still Dr's have to explain everything to patients but still back to the question. You think it is a good law that a Dr. would have to deny a dying woman a liver even though they had one because she wasn't registered as an organ donor herself and would just let her die?

i think they would still have to make sure the organs being donated were suitable , i mean not just taking the organs because they can but because they are viable

if it was the law then they would have no choice , this is why i'm going to say should they make it compulsory

it would suck to be the doctor as they are there to save lives and to do no harm

im just thinking that it would make people think more about being donors and to be honest we really do need more donors

But its a huge deal to some people and they are scared. I am proud to think that i can save lives after my death but for some people its too horrible, I think we have to respect that and accept that whilst it would be great if everyone did not everyone can or will.

but why are people scared , is because they don't understand , because they don't want others to have their organs , because of their beliefs

i think until it happens to a family member of someone you know alot of people don't really think about it , i lost my nephew due to cancer (he was 5) and it really opened our families eyes to it , we are all donors but my husband isnt , i have asked him why and he cant really explain why he isnt

You can't just think oh hey it would be a great idea because more people would be donors, you have to look at the actual real repercussions of it and take those into account. So basically based on a real life situation of a Dr. being made by law to refuse a woman a liver even though they had one and having to watch a woman die who they could save, perhaps a woman with young children and a Husband. That's a real life situation that would occur, that is real consequences of this law and all you think is ah well that would suck for the Dr?
