Teeth brushing at a young age
posted 3rd Feb
Okay so.I've heard of people starting when they are newbs
So when did you start brushing their teeth and/or gums?
I'm starting to feel like a smurf mom since I've never "brushed" Bailee's. She's 10 months old... should I.go.out and buy the baby tooth brush and paste?

yes!!! if they have teeth, try to floss as well. kids teeth can get cavities very fast too. i would recommend xylitol toothpaste. its safe to swallow. you can find at whole foods.

Yes you should. They have "finger brushes" for babies as young as 3 months. I started using one around 4.5 months with my son. I don't remember every day, but most days he just gets breastmilk anyway, which is actually good for teeth, so I'm not too worried about it.

I am paranoid about teeth issues because my sisters teeth were like chalk and they dissolved so I started with warm water and a finger brush then at 3 months I started with infant gum and tooth cleanser even though neither on my kids had teeth at that time. But my daughter has teeth issues anyways.

Hi! I am a dental hygienist... I usually recommend moms to start cleaning their child's gums as soon as they start teething. You can use a clean wash cloth and water. Once the teeth are in start using an extra soft baby toothbrush with water. This not only helps keep bacteria out but it also gets the child ready for brushing in the long run. The sooner you start the better it is in the end. A lot of my patients say their kids love brushing because they started them early. The ones that started brushing their child's teeth late say their kids hate brushing. It all depends on the child and the caregiver. Use water only until they are older. Good luck.

Ive brushed DDs teeth since her first one popped through. We have plunket (kind of like WIC) and the nurse gave me a baby toothbrush and baby toothpaste. Be careful what toothpaste you use, because even alot of the baby ones have fluoride, and since they cant spit it all out yet it can be harmful in the long run. I use an organic baby toothpaste with no fluoride and DD loves getting her teeth brushed.
