That's a good idea and a nice thing to do.

wheeeelp.... i live in the city. im pretty jaded towards homeless as awful as it might sounds, its pretty commonplace. there's several people i often help out. like bob the veteran on the north washington street bridge. im always hooking him up with gloves, hats, snacks, cash, etc.

its pretty easy to tell the junkies from the genuine homeless and destitute.

Why does it matter though?
If you think someone is a drug addict or drunk why not give them food then? Alot of them have a serious addiction and it's pretty much a disease. My family member was addicted to herion for over 20 years ... left and became homeless and just changed into a completely different person from drugs. Giving food, or coats to keep warm or what not can help. There are alot of people addicted to drugs that are homeless and they can end up dead from the cold or from having no food. They need help too.

i didnt say that i only give to sober old men... go re-read. i said its easy to tell the difference. i give money and things to people i have got to know and built a repoire with. addiction is a disease yes, no one is denying that. if you're an addict begging for money on the street instead of robbing an old lady at an ATM i give you soooo much credit for that. i know what it feels like to be sick. its not a good place to be. there are also many oganizations out there to help the homeless. if you're homeless its by choice...

I feel sad for them. I lways give them a few dollars, once I give it to them it becomes theirs. They can spend it however they wish.

Not to mention that people give addicted people a hard time because it's preventable, which isn't always the case necessarily. Some people get addicted to help deal with depression because they can't afford the mental health care they need, for instance.

Homeless because of addiction? It's preventable and you suck at life.
Homeless because of life? Oh, you poor thing. Life is truly unfair.

Homeless because of addiction they suck at life? Really???

Maybe it's just because I grew up around a person addicted to drugs that I have compassion for addicts.. but it's a sickeness... and they NEED help no doubt. And yes lots turn down help.. but just to pass them by on the streets and think "Oh you suck at life" or even thinking that way just seems so heartless. Addicts need food and clothes also...
You never know someones full story... I always try to be compassionate toward homeless.. addicts or not.

Edit... I was venting about people who THINK that way. I know you don't feel that way ! Just wanted to make that clear!

I never said it was. That's just the thought pattern people typically have when they put one type of homeless person over another.

Kind of like how aborting a rape baby is okay but not a "preventable" one.

yeah its sad all around. addiction is such an awful disease. ive lost way too many awesome people to it. you have fun a few times, then it stops being fun, and you're trapped.

Honestly, I don't think either right away- I always think "Is this guy who is holding up a sign begging for money, RIGHT next to my car door at the entrance of the mall, REALLY homeless, or do they want to carjack me and kill me and cannibalize me?" THAT is my first thought,as horrible as that sounds LMAO I have a natural distrust for anyone and everyone. Can't help it. HOWEVER, after that initial fear of being murdered, I think "Maybe they need food"....I don't know...I'm an smurf I guess lol
