Little bit of back story my little girl was born at 32 weeks, spent almost 8 weeks in the hospital with feeding issues (2 swallow evals finally show no aspiration with thickened foods) so we got to come home. We have been home for 2.5 months now. She was hospitalized last weekend with RSV and pneumonia (not aspirations but bacterial from the RSV). I don't think she eats enough she is only 11 lbs 4 oz at this time. She only eats 2-3 ounces at a time. I asked the pediatrician what a normal 4 1/2 month old eats and she said about 23 ounces (She has only ate 23 ounces on 1 day. on a normal day she used to eat about 19 ounces) Right now she is only eating about 12-13. The Dr. does not seem concerned about it and said I don't need to keep track anymore because it causes me undo stress. I know she was born 8 weeks early but I still don't think she is eating enough. Her fontanels are not sunken in and she has enough wet diapers every day. What do yall think?
I want to say she should be taking about 2x her weight in ounces of milk. So that would roughly be about 22 oz. As long as she is continuing to grow, has wet diapers, and isn't showing signs of dehydration then I wouldn't worry about it. If something comes up, like dehydration or not peeing then make sure you talk to her pedi right away and see if there is anything you can do.
Everything I look up said 1 and 1/2- 2 times her weight. I know with the rice cereal in the bottles it fills her up but I can not get her to eat more. Sometimes she will eat 3 ounces and sometimes only an ounce. I feel like she don't eat enough but they tell me I'm worried for nothing.
My girls are just about 8 months old, and just over 15 and 16 lbs. They eat between 20-27 oz on average a day at this point. They were about your baby's size at 4 months and ate similar amounts. Just the other day my one daughter only ate 19 oz. I wouldn't worry too much. As long as she is still gaining weight at her appointments, she's doing fine.
