Time to Buy?!?!
posted 2nd Feb
So, I have a question.
When is the right time to start buying things for my baby? Im only 7 weeks along, and I don't know what I am having yet, but I''m just curious. My soon to be mother in law yelled at me for buying neutral clothes and a cheap carseat (for an extra), she said I need to wait until after my baby shower. Its my first child, and im very excited! And I want to start getting things now, So any advise?

I'm waiting, but I'm jaded. I'm 14 weeks and haven't even started to think about buying things. I'd just start saving back money. I have a couple grand saved back so far.

I'd wait until you were at least a little into the 2nd trimester, i waited until at least 20 weeks with my first and then bought all the gender stuff at around 30weeks. With my last i didn't buy until i was 25 weeks, waited until i got another ultrasound to confirm a girl and then just slowly bought from there, got the bigger things first then smaller last.

I wouldn't buy too much. once you find out what it is, I'd say it's okay to buy a few clothes, but you will probably get given a lot. I've only bought about 5 outfits for DD, and she has a full wardrobe until she's about 2, just from clothes I've been given.
I really didn't start buying things until after my shower. You really don't want to have to return a lot of things, and even if you do end up having to return some things, you want to have something left that you need to buy to use that store credit on.

I started buying a box of diapers and a box of wipes every week at the grocery store every week. My DD is almost 5 months and I just bought the first pack of wipes (only because I needed to get the sensitive type she had a rash from antibiotics), I still have 2-3 more months of diapers! I tape the receipt to the box so I can exchange them if I need a bigger size! I didn't buy any clothes or anything until I found out the sex. My baby shower was canceled because I had her at 32 weeks and I had everything I needed!

I would just start saving money. A lot can happen, and baby showers are usually a good opportunity for getting a lot of stuff. Just wait and put stuff on like a wish list or something to help ease your shopping needs for now.
We only bought one thing when we found out the sex and then waited til after my baby shower to buy anything else.

I personally waited until around 14 weeks since I had a m/c at 11 weeks and didn't know for a week and a half after. But once I found out the gender I went hog wild making sure I didn't buy stuff on my baby registry.

Defiantly wait! By trying to buy and stock up now chances are you'll spend money you didn't need to or get duplicates at your shower. My husband and I have decided to buy newborn/ premie ourselves since newborn only lasts about 2months. We'd rather have more people purchase other stage/ sizes. However I am putting all of my money earned into savings. If you try to buy everything at once you'll get frustrated, because of the large volume of things the baby needs. I'm 18 weeks we found out we are having a boy and we just started buying for him. But we are having a large shower, my goal is to save as much money as possible for those items that deplete.

I wouldn't buy any preemie clothes unless your baby is actually a preemie. Do you know how tiny those are?

This. Start a registry. It's never too early to start your registry. I started mine at 10 weeks. plus that gives you lots of time to go in and add/delete things as you go, so by the time your shower rolls around people will know exactly what you want.

I'm 25w tomorrow and JUST started buying things. I DO have a few things hand-me-down (I've got 2 older kids who are 7 and 4) but not much and won't get much of anything from anyone else.
With my 1st, I didn't buy anything until around 28w. And I never have had a shower and won't get one this time either

I started at 10 weeks with a crib. This is my second ans I'm 23weeks now. I've bought diapers every two weeks so were pretty well stocked up. This week I'm ordering her car seat and stroller. I've got some clothes and burp cloths and little stuff like pacis.

Yes I'm aware of a premie size, if something were to happen I would love to be prepared for him. If he were to come as expected in stead of early then they'd be returned. We haven't bought any premie clothes. Just newborns but I am buying a few just in case, no harm no foul. Buying them after is a bit late especially when you have a crying baby in the incubator that needs your full attention, the last thing I'd wanna do is go shopping.
