Yes actually, if it isn't up to code they will make them fix it. But they will also make to move out and the landlord does not have to honor your lease once it's fixed. At least that's the way it is here.
My husband and I had to have the health department come in once on an apartment we were sure was unsafe after we had already rented it. It turned out that there was a structural issue, a carbon monoxide leak, and do much squirrel and rat feces in the walls that it was considered a Health hazard. Wear to vacate while landlords made the necessary repairs but they also had the option of terminating our lease agreement, which they did.
