re: Smoking weed while pregnant

I have a friend in Virginia whose baby (or his poop, or whatever) was tested at birth, and it came up positive for weed (no other drugs) and CPS was on them like white on rice. No he wasn't taken away, but it was definitely a problem.

Sadly, it is up to her. I just pray my nephew is healthy. If not, the family, including me, will blame her. After losing my daughter, I had no tolerance for parents that put their child's health and safety at risk.

They never drug tested my LO or me when I gave birth. I don't think they test all babies poop.. Now if they suspect you are on drugs or if you had drugs in your system at routine check ups throughout your pregnancy then yes they will test.

I don't know how you could know for sure. I don't think they tested me or my kids, but since I was on nothing it would have come back clean anyway so how could I know? It's not like they'd tell me they did it.

I guess every place does it differently. I know women who were urged to quit and others who were told it's okay in moderation, I guess it just depends on what doctor you go to, but it is common sense that when you're filling your lungs up with smoke you're also filling your baby's lungs up as well, so clearly it isn't harmless..

Hopefully he's fine, but if for some reason he does have a health issue, make sure she asks what could have possibly caused the health issues, it could have nothing to do with her smoking.. it could be something in her genes. My first child was born with an encephalocele and they said it could have been something in my genes that caused it, I had every possible test done to make sure it wasn't me or anything I did. They said it was just a fluke, that it was nothing I did and nothing in my genes to cause it, so make sure she gets all possible tests done before pointing fingers, but hopefully he's perfect..

They did genetic testing on my daughter after she was diagnosed with heart defects. I didn't know until they called with a positive result. You never know what they are checking your child for. Parents don't usually ask either. If it was negative, I would've never known they did it.

With my first daughter I had crazy morning sickness that literally made me sick every single day until the day she was born. Luckily for me my Dr gave me those lil white pills with the prego lady on them and it helped out alot (I still got sick everyday just not as often throughout the day). When I got prego again with my 2nd daughter the morning sickness was sooooooo much worse than the first. I couldnt get out of bed for a month straight cause of how often I was puking, I could not keep anything down, I was scared to eat or put anything into my body cause I knew it was just going to be thrown up shortly after. I looked like a zombie, dark circles under my eyes that were completely bloodshot from urging soo hard and was white like a ghost.. I was loosing weight and was getting super scared for my baby. I went to my Dr and we tried the pills again... they didnt work at all. After 3 months I couldnt function I was missing work for long periods of time and it was soo hard for me to care for my 18 month old. I was a pot smoker before but quit as soon as I knew I was pregnant. sked him what the affects would be and if this is something I could try to see if it would help. He told me that I could try, there were no real studies that have been done to say that pot was bad during a pregnancy, but didnt want me to overdo it (make it an all day thing) and that he wanted me to keep coming in to monitor baby and me. I allowed myself to have a couple hoots in the morning and at night. If it was a really bad day I would have a hoot at lunch time, but I was finally able to eat and keep food down. I got the color back in my face ( i literally looked like death!) I still lost 27 pounds during my pregnancy. But i delivered a perfect, completely healthy happy baby girl. My dr told me that I probably would have ended up having a miscarraige if things didnt change and that having that smoked probably saved my daughter. So I really cant say that smoking was bad unless your just doing it just because or its an all day thing and you dont keep your Dr informed of what your doing and keep monitoring baby. My baby is now just over 3 months and she's amazing!!! Sooo strong, smiles all the time, can hold her head up, tries to crawl, can stand herself up with help holding her, and loves to coo. Shes my lil sweetheart <3

I'm glad one person can confirm that some doctors do say it's okay. I knew I wasn't crazy! lol

I doubt she is keeping her doctor informed. She barely goes to the doctor.

It says there are no studies to say whether or not it is dangerous because the mothers often smoke cigarettes and drink alcohol during pregnancy as well. I know every one is different, but it also says it prevents the baby from getting the oxygen it needs and can increase the risk of miscarriage, low birth weight, premature births, developmental delays, and behavioral and learning problems. After having a miscarriage and a child with a heart defect, I wouldn't risk it. I was also already at risk for preterm labor and was put on bed rest, so I would never increase the risk. Testing for prenatal drug exposure isn't required here in Kansas. I also had everyday morning sickness during my first pregnancy, and medication didn't work. I was in and out of the doctor's office and hospital with ketones in my urine (I wasn't getting the nutrients I needed, so my body was using my fat supply to provide nutrition to the baby). I started forcing myself to eat once my OB said it was a sign of starvation, and could potential affect her growth and development.

I went to my Dr regularly (and even more because of the morning sickness I was having and I was considered a high risk pregnancy) and wrote down EVERYTHING in a journal for him. I was originally pregnant with twins and lost one of my babies during my 2nd month (when I was constantly puking, unable to eat, I had lost nearly 20 pounds) and more than likely would have lost my daugher if I didnt do something. I dont regret smoking a bit of pot during my pregnancy because it ultimately made me able to do the things like eat and help so I wasnt puking all day everyday..It saved my daughter.. Its insanely rude to assume you know someone... end the high school drama bullsmurf hun, its immature.
Anyway enough of that, I think doing anything (including medications even Tylenol, Tums, Gravol etc) should be avoided during pregnancy. But if you need to because its affecting everyday life and could do more damage to you and your baby if you didnt then talk to a Dr and keep track of everything.

And I agree.. I won't even drink coffee while pregnant, but I know some doctors tell women if it's helping them, to keep smoking the weed as long as you're not overdoing it. It's not like you're snorting cocaine or smoking crack to get high, it's helping your appetite and nausea.
