2 or 3 year old weight?
posted 1st Feb
Hey guys,
My daughter had her three year check up today, she just turned three last week (hence the 'two or three' part in the subject line, she's just barely three). She's always been a really healthy kid, and there were no concerns brought up at all. I'm currently at home on bed rest for a preterm labor situation (31 weeks tomorrow, yay!) so I wasn't able to be there, but my partner reported back all the details for me.
So I guess he got chewed out because apparently the doctor has decided she's overweight. This totally blindsided me, she's tiny! Now I'm second guessing myself, maybe I'm just blinded by love and missing something, but she really isn't a big girl at all. We're just now transitioning to 3T clothes, and this time last year she was still small enough to baby-wear. You can't see much of her in my profile pic, so I know it's hard to judge, but I always thought she was right on track. My partner is gigantic, about 6'4" and 250, and I'm pretty lanky myself at about 5'8" and 115 when I'm not pregnant so naturally we're going to have bigger kids.
I'm told she weighed 39 pounds which puts her in the 95th percentile for weight, and 98.5cm which puts her at 85th percentile for height. Is it possible the resident who did her check up just didn't account for her being so tall? Am I totally crazy here and overlooking a weight problem, or does that sound proportionate for a tall kid? She was weighed at my midwife's office (just for fun, she wanted to try the scale too) about two months ago and only weighed 34 pounds, so she either just had a big growth spurt or one of the scales was off. I don't own my own scale so I can't confirm either way.
I guess my partner was told to stop giving her whole milk, and it sounds insane to me to restrict a toddler's fat intake. But again, she's my first child and I have no idea where this weight thing is coming from so I don't know what to do about this, or if anything needs to be done at all.
What do/did your kids weigh at 2 or 3? Am I totally crazy and suffering from 'mommy blindness?'.

doesnt even look overweight... she may just carry it differently but doesnt seem obese or anything to me. i would tell the doctor to shove it. she looks healthy and in a few years, as she grows taller she will most likely thin out

See that sounds like her at around her two year well baby check up too, and no one ever mentioned the word "overweight" at that point either. Such a mystery!

My son is 4 and weighs 33 lbs. When he was 3 he was about 29-30 lbs. He is in like the 10th percentile though...and he was always small. He was born small too.

That's exactly what I thought. She's a pretty active kid, maybe just a dense muscle thing? I mean she still has her little bits of baby fat, but come on, she's barely three! I hardly think this is 'cut out whole milk' territory.
I'm now realizing the irony of posting a pic of her with a chocolate cake on a post about weight gain lol. It was her birthday, for the record, just happened to be the most recent pic.

My 16 month old is 30 lbs and hes healthy. Shes probably just fine although I would take her off whole milk anyway, after 2 its not needed usually.

That is a good point. We tend to eat pretty hippy-dippy whole foods, and like I mentioned I'm a pretty small woman and between that and my hyperemesis I have a really hard time gaining weight appropriately while pregnant, so I tend to keep full fat options around. But I suppose it really isn't necessary for her, I think I was focussing on the whole milk thing because it was brought up as a weight loss option and my instinct was to feel uncomfortable at the idea of making dietary changes for a healthy three year old, ya know? But on the other hand, she really isn't much of a milk drinker to begin with. If anything the kid would be happiest eating fruit and drinking water, which just further confuses me about the weight thing.

I guess that's him in your profile pic? He's adorable! And he looks like he's at a totally perfect weight too. I'm starting to think there must be a pretty wide normal range for little ones based on how they carry their weight. Happy early birthday to Gavin!
