I'd get DH to go to the door and they'd leave then but it's the simple fact a "no thank you" should be enough for them to say ok and be on their way.

I agree. I'd feel very uncomfortable. I'm sorry!

Well, sometimes it doesn't. And yeah, then I find great amusement in finding ways to irritate them, piss them off, or make them uncomfortable enough to leave me be.

Exactly! I don't enjoy being rude to people. I typically avoid conflict at all costs but when they stand with their foot in my door, after I've told them I do not believe and am not interested and to please leave, and tell me my children are going to hell, god is the only thing that can protect them from the evils of this world and "if we don't serve god we serve the devil" it's rude, disrespectful and offensive and I no longer feel they deserve MY respect or patience. At that point they deserve more than a rude dismissal.

In that situation, honestly, I would tell them to leave or I'd call their church, or the police. Pushing people to listen is completely against the rules, and missionaries can actually be thrown out of the program (which they paid for themselves when they were a teenager) for doing so. I doubt it was Mormon missionaries that came to your door - if so, they weren't acting in the best interest of the Church. We believe in spreading the word and helping our neighbors with anything they may need, but we do not believe in pushing the Church on anyone. I wholeheartedly respect the views of others, and so should ALL missionaries/door-knockers.

I usually just entertain them and take whatever reading materials and politely say, "Have a nice day." If they're rude, which I haven't really experienced yet, I'd probably offer them a beer or a bloody mary to calm them down then shut the door in their face. We don't really have a lot of those around here, actually. I think I can count the number of times someone like that has come to my door on one hand. The first time, it was two Mormon guys and the poor kid had a cast on his hand from falling off of his bike. I felt really bad for him, so I let them come in and give me the whole script.

Are missionaries and jehovah witnesses the same thing? I'm not religious so i don't know much about it, but we had the most problems with jehovah witnesses.

Most of them are friendly and just leave. But there's always the odd ones now and then who just don't take no for an answer or say bullsmurf things
I don't want To be rude, or insult them. I don't think I've specifically said 'please leave when they keep going so ill try that.
Maybe ill get a beware of dog sign for my gate lol.

You'll have to forgive me of all of my questions, I may just PM you, lol.

In order to move up within the church, do you have to be a missionary? I know there are steps within the mormon church, and with each step comes more information/more responsibility within the church.

And see, I agree that is totally unacceptable. However, ask people how to deal with religious folks who come door to door and many people feel that is the FIRST way to deal with them. They feel that rudeness is a first line of defense rather than a last line. Not to mention, rudeness rarely does anything. Being rude to them doesn't work either, and if anything it seems people who advocate rudeness tend to have more problems I find.

I guess I just don't get it. Rudeness doesn't help at all. Talking about atheism doesn't help, if anything it gives them more fodder. Trying to embarrass them doesn't really help either.

A stern no, followed by informing them if they do not leave your property you will be calling the police because they are trespassing, is both effective and to the point.

Missionaries can be from any denomination.

Oh no, I think Jehovah Witnesses call themselves missionaries as well, however I was referring to the missionaries within the LDS (Mormon) Church in my response. Sorry if I wasn't clear!

Absolutely not! Everyone who is willing, is called to a position to serve within the Church. My husband was ordained to the Melchizedek Priesthood (also known as an Elder, just like those who go on Missionaries) a few months before I was baptized. I think what you're referring to is the office of President/Prophet, First Counselor, Second Counselor, The Quorum of the Twelve, etc? Or are you referring to the leadership on the individual Church level? If you're curious about how the Church is organized, this may help:

Always feel free to ask me anything, I love answering questions about the Church I love, and I never mind learning more from alternative viewpoints/beliefs!
ETA:
The leaders of an individual Ward are called the Bishop, First Counselor and Second Counselor, I realized I forgot to add that   Also, here is a link about the Melchizedek Priesthood, if you want to know more about it and the way the Priesthoods are structured within the Church:
