moms who eat very little meat

posted 1st Feb
So I do not eat a lot of meat. When I got pregnant I didn't eat any however had to start during my pregnancy because I was loosing massive amounts of weight because I couldnt eat enough protein and was very anemic. So towards the end I started making more and more veg meals again. Here I am 4m pp and maybe eat meat once a day. Now I have gotten to the point when I eat red meat or pork I get the WORST most stinkiest gas ever. I wonder if its because my body isn't used to digesting it. Its nasty. It doesnt happen when i eat chicken or fish either. Does this happen to anyone else?

It's probably because you aren't used to processing it. I didn't eat meat for 10 years prior to being pregnant, I all of a sudden needed chicken! But I always felt awful afterwards. My doctor told me to stop with the meat and just eat more lentils since I love them and try to ignore the craving. I wanted to punch him but he was right. Do you really enjoy red meat and pork or would you be ok cutting it out completely and replacing it with something else? I never felt bad after fish while pregnant so I did eat that as often as I was allowed to.

Oh no I can totally be fine cutting it out. I was pretty sure it was my body not being able to handle it. Because its nasty after lol

I was a vegetarian for 12 years. I just hated meat. I might of eaten some chicken in those years, but no way on ground beef.
During my pregnancy with my daughter all I craved was steak, and tons of it.
I kept eating meat after she was born (life is so much easier, I had no idea haha) and ground beef especially would tear my stomach up! Gas and bloat and sometimes stomach aches. I also get bad dreams when I eat red meat before bed hahaha

I hated when that happened! I would just cut it out then to be honest. Not worth beig stinky for! If you loved it I'd say try reintroducing it to yourself slowly

This happened to my daughter. She went a year or so without eating any type of meat. Started back up again and had really excessive stinky gas. Her doctor suggested a probiotic. I bought one, sprinkled it on her food and she was good to go. No more gas at all.

The whole "my body can't process it" thing has to be a myth, we have the digestive tract of meat eaters and we are meant to eat like any other great ape, it just has to be a change in intestinal flora from not eating it for so long. Makes TONS of sense that the probiotic helped.

I eat meat once a day, too! Really all we should be eating it.

We eat chicken 3x a week and beef 2x. Make sure the beef is low fat. If its high fat content i get bad stomach aches.

i dont have a problem with white meat, just red meat. I get bloated and painful stinky gas. Maybe its a tolerance thing. Because it REALLY does throw my system through a loop. And it never did before.

humans actually aren't made to eat meat. one evidence is our teeth ... but I'm not trying to get in an argument. I don't care if people eat meat or not. That is their thing. (sorry, not sure how to write that without it coming off as bitchy .. which I'm not trying to be ...)

but OP, yes, sounds like your body just isn't used to it anymore and "protests". Meat has to ferment in your stomach (or gut or wherever) in order for it to be digested, so it would make sense that it would make stinky gas.

not necessarily, evolution. We have wisdom teeth that are no longer needed and rot out of our mouth if we leave them there, if they have room to grow in at all that is. We have organs in our body that we can remove completely and it doesn't effect our life at all, like our appendixes. The less mess people eat, over time our digestive systems will change. It's just how it works. If you feed your body broccoli for months and then eat a big heaping plate of supper fattening, hormone full ground beef, you're bound to have a issue or two at first, unfortunately.

Well now that's not really true. Why do you think when you visit a foreign country the food typically makes you sick for a while? It's because your body isn't used to that type of food. My sister has only been a vegetarian for 3 years, and she decided to eat chicken noodle soup a few days ago and was puking and had diarrhea immediately afterward. If your body isn't used to those proteins it may not make the enzymes needed to process and digest them anymore.

Um yes we are. Our digestive tract is an omnivore's digestive tract because we are great apes and are supposed to eat that way.

I was vegan for 5 years I don't need an internet lesson in not eating meat.

Your body makes the same enzymes all the time. The BACTERIA in your digestive tract will change. That is what I said in my original post, the intestinal flora. That's why I said probiotics make sense.

haha I thought I was crazy for having this issue! Normally we sick to turkey or chicken, but if we do end up eating pork of beef, it's like everyone has super bad gas, it's awful. Glad to read that a probiotic can help though!
