When did you stop...

Swaddling LO?

I recently transitioned him to sleeping on his back in the pack n play in my room. He has severe GERD and we were forced to have him sleep in his infant seat because of asphyxiation precautions. He doesn't tolerate sleeping in there any longer, and I can't say I blame him. He's getting bigger and likes to move around and stretch out. I think though, that he's feeling less secure now that he's not confined to the chair, and while he likes to be able to stretch and move...he might need a little something to make him feel safe. I refuse to co - sleep with him in the bed, I am NOT against other people doing it, I think it's a great thing for bonding...but DH is an extremely heavy sleeper and I had a friend that lost a baby that way (long story). So, I want to try swaddling him again. Do you think he's too old for that at 5 months old? I know you can buy them with velcro, he had one when he was a newborn but eventually he started getting out of it.I'm leaning towards trying a sleep sack instead, because he has to be able to turn on his side with the reflux. Does this sound like a good option to you? Do you think a sleep sack will make it harder for him to turn off of his back?

Curious to hear your feelings and opinions on this.

TIA!

I stopped swaddling by 2 months because my baby could get out of it. However we also had a sleep sack that we put him in so he can roll around but still has that security and no risk of getting out of the blanket and suffocating himself.. It is for 0-9 months so it still fits him(he is 6 months) but after 4 months he was fine in regular jammies. We still use it occasionally though.

I had to stop at 3 months cause they got out no matter what I did so I got snuggle beds and they worked the same way without swaddling them . I just put it in there Cott my dd still sleeps in it even has to sleep out of the Cott now cause my ds sprawls out lol

I would think swaddling might be a bad idea if he is able to roll over now....what if he rolled over and became stuck and couldnt roll himself back? I loved those sleep sacks, my DS slept in those until he started standing up in his crib and I HAD to switch him to pajamas with feet...

I stopped swaddling at about 2 months, I had a velcro one and I'd wake up and he would have wrigged so much that his feet were out and his arms were free but it was still over his shoulders and could have slipped up to his neck and choked him. Swaddling him in normal blankets didn't work, he's out within about a minute. he sleeps just fine without it. I also hear it can affect their growth or something if you do it for too long, puts pressure on their joints and stuff.

Oh yeah....there is a lot of talk of hip displasia these days due to swaddling for too long...good point.

Here you can buy baby sleep positioners, they're something like foam with 2 raised sides + they're elevated so help with reflux babies. Can also make babies feel more secure till they get used to being in a big cot/crib. They're meant to be great with newborns to about 4 months, not sure about older babies though especially when they are able to roll around. I had a similar problem when my daughter outgrew her Moses basket, she loved it even though space was limited after 4 months lol. I put her in an infant sleeping bag + that helped loads, she can roll around to her hearts content + still feel secure. I also have her mattress elevated at the top (folded bath towel underneath it as per public health nurse's instructions) coz she's a reflux baby. She sleeps much better now.

We stopped swaddling at 5 months when they were consistently getting out of it during their sleep (including the velcro ones). We moved on to sleep sacks (with their arms out) and still use them now at almost 8 months. They can still roll on their sides and backs with them on quite easily. I just use it as a blanket for them really.

Oops, I meant they can roll on their tummies in the sleep sacks. One of my girls always sleeps on her tummy. The other sleeps on her side or back.
