Last name change / add

I'm wanting to add my last name to my sons.
Not sure how to do it...which way
Like should I do his current and hyphen mine or the other way around?
The thing about his dads last name is it not his original last name...it was changed when his mom got remarried to his step dad...who he doesn't like ( they have been divorced a long time now)
Id really like him to have and keep my lastname as he's the first boy in 17yrs.
He's 3 now..his dad and I are divorced.
His dad has his initials tattood on him...he did that after we got divorced..
The only thing about Sands Adair is it sounds a lil aarbic when you say it and my son is mixed B/W...so he's tan...
