breastfeeding and ttc

posted 31st Jan
we just started ttc this month (yay!) and i am still BF my son who just turned a year old. i got my first pp period at 7 months and the first few were a little irregular but the last three months have been regular just as they were prior to ds. we didnt use any ovulation kits since my cycles are usually so regular. i was due for AF on the 24th and she is a no show! i have taken 3 tests all of which have been negative so i dont think that i am pregnant. i also recently stopped BF my son at night. (about 10 days ago) so im wondering if that may have effected AF? or ovulation?

I've heard that out can take longer to get a positive while breastfeeding because of the hormones. However, I have had my period since 6 weeks exclusively breastfeeding and it was regular until just recently I went 3 weeks late for no good reason. Hopefully in your case it's the first reason though. Good luck.

if you reduce how often you breastfeed then you will increase your chances of ovulation. Breastfeeding shouldn't affect levels of HCG, therefore it should not affect testing. Breastfeeding and ovulation/AF are a bit of a mystery as nothing is guaranteed whilst a woman continues to breastfeed. This is because breastfeeding suppresses ovulation, hence no AF.

I would always advocate to breastfeed for as long as you and baby are comfortable and happy to do so. good luck and have fun trying!

thank you! what you said makes a lot of sense!   well im hoping since we have stopped nighttime BF that my chances of ovulation will be higher this month! either way i will continue to BF if that means it takes a little longer for baby #2 so be it   now if only AF would show her ugly face im ready for round 2 of trying! haha
