bm intake and delaying solids

posted 31st Jan
i know this is a hard question but do we know how much a 5month old BF baby is suppose to eat?
LO is almost 5 months old and only eats 3 to 4 ounces at a time. I mainly pump and feed him in a bottle. He probably gets 24 ounces total a day and doesnt have interest for more.

i havent started solids yet cuz he has no interest for more after a 3-4 ouce bottle. my mothet wont get off my back about it saying he needs solids andis weaning from milk. :/

With formula I know it's 32+ ounces even once they start solids. That being said, I'll also say as long as he's still gaining weight he's fine

I'm not sure about how many oz. he should be getting. However it is perfectly reasonable and recommendable to delay solids until at least 6 months. Especially if he doesn't seem overly hungry or interested in eating. People did things differently when our parents were parents. A lot of what we do now seems over dramatic in comparison to them. If you want reassurance about delaying solids talk to your pedi. I had one pedi tell me I could give dd solids at 4 months. I told him I would be ebfing till 6 months. He was amazed by that and told me it was the healthiest option.

If he's gaining weight and having enough wet/soiled diapers, he's fine. There's no RIGHT amount for anyone to eat. If he's eating until he's full, then there's nothing you can do.

Don't listen to your mom. They did so many things differently back in the day. My grandmother was trying to get me to talk to the doctor about putting rice cereal in LOs bottles when she was only a month. My mom had it in her bottles when she was only TWO WEEKS!

0_0 that's insane!

My FIL thought it was a great idea to give my son chocolate when he was a month old! FIL's mother thought it was brilliant to give him mashed potatoes n gravy at 2 months! 0_0 Needless to say, when SO had to deal with a sick baby he spoke up next time! Lol

They tried again with the potatoes a month later and he screamed in horror...SO said something about it too. I was fuming and he could see I wanted to blow my top, but I held back and let him say something. Now I deal with FIL giving A 16-month old soda. Ugh it will never end! When I told SO I wanted to tell FIL if he kept it up he wouldn't be seeing LO, SO got pissed at me. I just try to remind him it pisses me off...eventually I'll get pissed enough because nothing's bein said about it and flip the eff out!

is there a reason you don't breastfeed directly at the breast?

this is all good info. =)

unfortunately some pedis are not "up to date" either. It's actually fine to EBF for 12 months.

oh I'd be saying something the minute I saw the soda can! and if they didn't respect my wishes, I wouldn't be visiting for awhile.

I think the average is 25 oz, with a range from 19-30 oz per day.
There is a calculation our pediatrician uses that is based on baby's weight, but I'm not sure what it was exactly.

My pedi did not tell me that but my neighbor who is a nutritionist did! I was so happy cause we were in no way ready to start solids at 6 months.
