I've had awful servers that were rude and lazy and I didn't tip at all. I'm pretty understanding, if it's busy or whatever, but when it's dead and you give me an attitude when I have to ask for a refill or mention my order was wrong, i'm not paying for it.

Quoting FroggysMommy:" I tip based on service. I once had a waiter be a complete smurfing dick to me and my ex, and was an even ... [snip!] ... you are constantly getting smurf tips maybe it's time to look at yourself instead of saying "people suck! I got stiffed AGAIN!""
That's how I operate. I tip really well 95% of the time, but if I get treated poorly I don't "owe" you anything...and generally I don't think it's even 5% of the time I get bad service, but it has happened & when it does, I don't feel obligated at all. If I need extra, if people in my party are rude or aren't tipping well, I go overboard to make sure it's compensated. I also always tip a minimum of a few dollars even if my order might be a few dollars. It takes no less effort to bring me a pie & coffee than a sandwich & soda, so I never give less than a few bucks, even if that makes the tip 100% - again assuming no asshattery is involved. I also tip extra at the holidays, as I've always gotten holiday bonuses & figure it is just passing that along. There was one waitress I adored where I used to lunch regularly when I worked & I always gave her a $50 at Christmas. I will definitely treat waitstaff well if I am treated well, but I don't put up with bullsmurf either & then feel like I am responsible for the way that person makes ends meet. If you suck at service, it is best that you skip taking a tip-based job.

Quoting melindapple:" I didn't know it was 25% I thought it was 15 or 20.   I always give good tips anyway. I went ... [snip!] ... were only like $8-$12 lol. I don't always tip like THAT but I do give a decent tip and that night we were all in a good mood."

I don't even know if it is or not but I worked as a server in high school so it opened my eyes to what happens behind the scenes. It's normal for me to leave $5 on a $20 bill...it's just how it is. And I can take into consideration that people may be having a bad day so if the service is bad or sucks, I tip about 15%.

I'll also add extra to my tip if my server is doing everything possible to make a neighboring table happy and they're still bitchy and rude because you know they aren't leaving a decent tip.

Eh, it still depends on where you work.

Quoting ~Ice Princess~:" A CNA? They make decent money... And you'd be surprised at what servers do..."

Lol. I wish we made decent money. My base rate isn't even fourteen bucks an hour, but if I work on weekend evenings/nights, I can make more than that fifteen hour. But I feel what I do requires more skill than a waitress.

It probably varies by state on pay or even county.
I agree it takes more skill, but that doesn't equal harder..kwim?
