homemade baby food?

posted 30th Jan
worth it?

I wanted to do it with my first but I was talked out of doing it. Now that I live farther away from the ones who told me it would be too much work I would like to give it a shot. I've looked at the wholesomebabyfood website to see what fruits/veggies are good first foods to try (since I know cereal isn't really unnecessary)

So what I'm asking is, if you've made your own, was worth it? Was it less expensive?

Definitely less expensive and so much easier than I thought it would be.

Certain things you can just mash with a fork in like 2 seconds.

You just puree food, freeze it in an ice cube tray, move the food cubes to a freezer bag once frozen, and thaw however many your baby eats.

I did it, but I got bored with it and just gave him normal food and let him mow through that lol. Seemed like I was paying about the same with how much my kid eats. When he eats baby food he'll eat 4 4oz jars WITH like 1/2 cup of oatmeal.

i think its worth it. DD is 7 months now and i make all her food. i have never fed her can food. it looks so gross and has so much preservatives in it. i wouldnt like to be fed canned mushy meat so im not going to give it to my baby. its not a lot of work at all. im a full time student at college and a full time mom and im 19. i make enough food for the week and it is so much less expensive. initially it may not seem like it because you have to buy all the gadgets but there are also tons of wayys to do it cheep. i just chose to buy the baby bullet and all that good stuff lol

I can't even begin to tell you the $$ I've saved making my own! We are able to have a garden so I grew a lot of my own veggies too, but honestly I've found you can get veggies - fresh and frozen - a lot cheaper.
Plus to me it's fun and easy! I just puree up a big batch of whatever and freeze it in my icecube trays and then store them in freezer bags
I use that website too for recipe ideas, but once you do it for awhile you really just start experimenting with different things.

the only thing I would have to buy is a couple of ice cube trays and freezer bags. I have a blender/food processor already.

ya and this other idea i did was i put blobs of food on a aluminium sheet, i put it in the freezer and once it was frozen i put it in a freezer bag. i like doing that because you can put the exact amount your baby will eat. then all you do it take it out the bag and de frost it. its so simple. especially once you get the hang of it

Worth it? Yes totally. lol

And really cheap too. Not hard work at all. Ijust made pretty much whatever me and my older kids eat, and just made it more baby friendly. But I didnt make purees at all. I just made it chunky with my blender and froze in batches.

All fruits and veggies were cooked till soft and given to her to eat herself from 6 months old, and her main meals were like pastas and rice with meats and veggies etc....

All meats were cooked on the stove with light seasonings and veggies, then cooked in the oven so the meat would become tender and easy to chunk or shread up.
Iwould then add the meat and veggies in a rice dish or pasta or as is.

Only things I bought extra for her were ground chicken and turkey, and unsalted butter (which at almost 12 months) I still use unsalted butter for her toast and sandwiches etc....

I am glad I dived into making my own food dor her, she has an amazing love for food is not picky at all and loves spices just like the rest of us.

I make my own baby food. I cook the veggies and add a little water and run the ought the food processor. I think it tastes way better than the canned food. I recently added up iow much my food cost and how many jars I could fill and discovered I wasn't saving any money. Boo! But I take a day and make like a months worth of baby food in like 3 hours. I wash the baby food jars in the dishwasher and reuse them and put them in the freezer.

that's not a good idea.

Can I use glass jars for freezing homemade baby food? Can I use Gerber/Beechnut glass jars?

Glass that is not specifically manufactured for freezing has the unfortunate ability to crack, leave behind tiny, microscopic shards and fragments and also is prone to bursting. Baby food jars are not manufactured for freezing or for extreme heating. BALL, makers of home canning products, manufactures 4 ounce jars specifically for freezing as do other manufactures.
Many people do freeze in baby food jars but I do not advocate this whatsoever. After all, you're making baby's food because you want the best nutrition and health for your little one; why take a risk by freezing in jars? There are glass jars on the market that are specifically manufactured for freezing and those jars should pose no hazards at all.
Gerber containers do not have any specific markings or labeling to indicate that they are good for either temperature extremes. I have emailed Gerber and they have said that they do not recommend using their containers for storage at either temperature extremes such as freezing or extreme heat (microwaving). Feel free to Gerber as they were very quick with their reply to us. I do not advocate freezing foods in any container that is not specifically labeled for freezing.

There are certain "grades" of plastics that are specifically manufactured to withstand high temperatures and/or freezing. You may look on the bottom of the containers for the plastic symbol and then look the symbol up here at American Plastics Council. Please note that these codes do not necessarily mean that the container you are using is 100% safe for heating or freezing; the codes will give you a baseline to help with your decision.
