one year old weight and low iron?

posted 30th Jan
DS is 22lbs and 29in, he came back with low iron levels. He isn't very good with solids, so when I tried to feed him any kind of food (especially with iron) we will refuse it and if he eats it, he will choke and throw up, I cut his food in small pieces and I ket him feed himself but that doesn't work either. Is there anything else I can give him to boost his iron levels?

How much did you LO weight at 1? And did he/she ever have low iron levels?

My son was anemic. They had me giving him iron with the little dropper things.

If you don't want to do that, here are some iron-rich foods:

  • Red meat
  • Egg yolks
  • Dark, leafy greens (spinach, collards)
  • Dried fruit (prunes, raisins)
  • Iron-enriched cereals and grains (check the labels)
  • Mollusks (oysters, clams, scallops)
  • Turkey or chicken giblets
  • Beans, lentils, chick peas and soybeans
  • Liver
  • Artichoke

My son was like 26 lbs at his 1 yr check up and he was slightly anemic. I have always had low iron and he was exclusively breast fed. As soon as he weaned and began taking a daily vitamin and eating regularly, his levels were fine.

DD will be 1 in a few days, she is 15lbs and 26 inches. We have not had her iron checked yet at all. But she drinks 2 1/2 cups of whole milk a day and no formula (she refused it) so I really had to watch her iron intake.

She eats either spinach or broccoli and other greens every day. You say he has trouble with solids. I would make a fruit/veggie smoothie to drink my lo loves them.

1c of whole milk
1 whole banana
1/4c of plain or vanillia yogurt.

And these are my add ins to it,
1/2c frozen cauliflower
1/2c spinach
1/2c strawberries, or blueberries, or pineapple or a frozen mixed fruit.
1/2c frozen peas or carrots.

I dont add all of it in it, just whatever I choose, but I always add in the frozen spinach
You can add in 1tbls of sugar or some kind of sweetner in, I dont cause my kids and even lo love it, and theyt eat their veggies, but I still make this for them cause its well good.

So try it and see if loo will drink it.
