re: Is This Normal Practice? (Public School)

Quoting Blair Waldorf (SuperKink):" Oh no this money was due by the 24th and the field trip isn't until tomorrow, so a week ahead of time. ... [snip!] ... period. End of sentence. They do not refund money. I thought that was ridiculous. I'll definitely be sending them the letter."

Normally field trip policy is laid out in the handbook, so check there to see if it's stated. But honestly, if he got himself suspended, then no, I don't think a refund is in order, and you would honestly be wasting your time writing that letter. He misbehaved, he is having to suffer the consequences, and unfortunately, you have to eat this cost.

If the trip was cancelled, then they'd give it back I'd suspect. However, since they collect it early, it's probably used to pay for items before the trip. The bus, the tickets, things like that. Just because a kid cancels at the last minute (or can't go) doesn't change the amount they probably had to pay.

[snip!] ... just amazed that they just "typically don't do it" and there was nothing ever stating that we wouldn't be refunded the money."</blockquote>

I wouldn't expect you to keep him home for 3w. That's just what i did. Making him sit in court with you will be a big punishment too. It can be a huge learning experience for him too.

I would send the letter & include why you are upset. Maybe it will have them change the policy or at least put a disclaimer on the permission slips.

That's the plan. Thanks.

Here its normal for Catholic schools, in the public system. My friends dd was sick and couldnt make a trip and they said due to the buses and the tickets per kid etc.....they cant refund cause it was already paid for (weeks in advance)

My kids attend public school as well, but not a Catholic one, and all firld trips are 100% free, the school pays for everything, the bus the venue and sometimes even the lunches for the students. etc......

And you're in Canada. So your "normal" isn't the same as our normal.

when I worked for the local school district that was the same thing. They have to pay for the tickets in advance, so they had already bought the ticket or paid for the buses. If the child couldn't go for any reason (suspension or illness) the money wasn't typically refunded here either and I don't think there was a disclaimer on the slips.
