baby scratches the living smu*f out of himself

posted 30th Jan
My baby is abusive to himself. If you leave him to his volition he will scratch his legs, face, and scalp till it bleeds. What is going on?

Admittedly he has very dry skin and his legs and cheeks are particularly dry. He also has been suffering from craddle cap for 12weeks now. We douse him in baby oil gel fresh out of the bath and use aquaphor during the day. Any other tips to stop him from tearing up his body?

I literally put gloves on his hands while changing him and keep pants on at all times because if his skin is exposed he will scratch it till it bleeds. We also cut his nails very short ever other day. Unfortunately we cant cover his head and face so I'm not sure what to do about that

Baby oil isn't really moisturizing & may be contributing to his dry skin. Coat him in the aquaphor & put socks on his hands at all times, not just during changes. Don't bathe him everyday, that also drys skin out badly.

I always file DD nails since she was tiny. Not in the way you file your own more line down the finger nail so it's smooth. I'm sorry that has to be terrible for both of you  maybe try to lotion a couple times per day too. I use Aveno and love it, more moisturizing then the petrolium based in my opinion. Wishing you and LO all the best luck!!!

Try socks on his hands, gloves never worked for either of my girls, but socks stayed on longer. And I would give them baths and rub them down with moisturizing baby lotion. It made her skin smooth and soft. She had a problem with cracking skin too. Hope I helped!

He loves sucking on his fingers for comfort so if he had socks on his hands on all times I think it would send him into full breakdown mode.

Just got some thin files so I may try cutting and then filing them too.

dd did this a lot from 2-5 months... its getting better but when ever shes tired and rubs her eyes she will still get her forehead once in a while. if her exzema is bad she will do it to her head too. just keep the nails very trimmed. thats the only thing that helped up

So how do you do a nightly routine on non-bath nights. I'm afraid that not putting him in the bath will make him think it's still day time. As it stands he gets a 7 minute bath every other day and a dip (literally) in the days inbetween.

LO gets bathed every other night, everynight after his bath I put lotion on him, so when he gets a full body rub down of lotion he knows its bed time, along with a Rock and a book. Really it's not good for anyone to shower/bath every day. It does not take long for kids to catch on
