Having a hard time with OT

I feel so bad for my daughter. She's three and she goes to speech therapy twice a week. Her insurance finally approved OT last week and she had her first session on Monday. It was really rough. An hour long session and she probably cried for a good 45-50 minutes of it.   She doesnt like touching the stuff he wants her to manipulate. She doesn't like the sounds or the activities...

She's 15 minutes into her second session right now. I'm sitting outside because they thought maybe if I wasn't in the room she'd do better. Not being distracted, I guess. I can hear her in there crying from here in the waiting room.

I know she needs to do it, but I really hate this

I'm an OT and if session are that awful for her maybe they need to adjust their activities a little. She may not be ready for what they are doing. I am guessing they are working on sensory issues from what you said. I also only treat my kids for 30 minutes especially at the beginning. A lot of the time they do not tolerate much more. I am so sorry she is struggling. It is so hard to hear your baby unhappy. Hang in there. It will get better.

Hang in there. DS is 3 and sees an OT as well. He was unsure at first, but now loves it. We are not allowed to go back w/ him, and that was hard. Plus, they were more... idk the right word but, basically made him do things that he didn't want to do but, it has really helped a lot.

My daughter started speech, it, pt, and early intervention at one year old and at first I would sit in and watch but then tried sitting by the secretary office in a different hallway and had to hear her cry even then. It's very hard but you're right its so worth it. She'll be 4 in May and is still in the therapies except for early intervention and she does great. She's also in preschool there, for a year now.

Good luck hopefully she warms up to it soon and can enjoy it and make friends with her therapists.

Maybe I'll ask if he'd shorten it until she can handle it better. I mean we're halfway through the session and all I hear is tears...

I'm hoping so. She loves speech therapy. She runs in the room and sometimes even gets upset when it's time to leave. It's just the OT she seems to hate.

Wouldn't hurt to ask. I have kids cry and yell at me frequently. It is hard for everyone. Breaks my heart too. It will all be worth it in the end.
