One good thing is that now there are many more resources available for socialization. Our local Y offers PE, Spanish, art, and theater classes that meet 3 days a week for two hours. Plus, every museum and arboretum in the area offers science classes. I think socialization depends on the parents and their choices.

We are actually doing the opposite. I'm teaching them at home, and having additional instruction outside of the home. But, I was kinda' thrown into the whole thing!

I haven't even started my education classes.   I'm just working on general education requirements so I can transfer from a 2 year tech college to a 4 year university.

I do agree with needing to know what you're doing. I'm not much on the unschooling thing that is popular now because I don't think it prepares them for college.

No. I would not, my sister was homeschooled and it ended up being incredibly detrimental (Socially, emotionally, etc)

I don't feel like I'm raising my kids in a bubble. *shrugs* Different strokes, different folks.

A good education is of the absolute importance to me, along with socialization/etc. I wouldn't half-ass my child's education (not directed at you, just in general to whomever.) We do co-ops, sport activities, and clubs. It's the right choice for us, and we'll re-evaluate if needed.

I should have been more detailed in my original post. I want someone with years of experience and qualifications to teach. My field is real estate and property management & I LOVE my job. I am not interested in furthering my education. I enjoy teaching my son hands-on life experience type of stuff.
He will most likely end up at the top elementary school within our district, then charter school that will eventually add all of the other grades so it is a one stop shop.

I think there's a time and place for unschooling, but I am very uncomfortable with it as a main "curricula" if you can call it that.

yeah I hear you. there's a school about an hour from us that has received national recogniztion for being one of the top charter schools in the country and is a model for many other schools out there. But I don't know if I'll be able to swing an hour drive every day. otherwise I'll just send her to where I'm working, because then I'll have an in on how she's behaving every day haha

I decided to post this because I basically got thrown into homeschooling my sons, for lack of a better word. Their elementary school (they're 7 and 5) was really pushing me to put them on ADHD meds and it was really causing issues. So I decided to homeschool. I've since found so many resources, curriculums, and information that I don't think most know are readily available. Before doing it, I thought it was strange and even slightly irresponsible. Now, of course, my opinion has changed greatly.

Education is very, very important to me and I want my son to have the best & that is not ME! haha

I've looked at the required courses. What I will probably struggle with most is anything having to deal with writing because I hate the constraints.

Elementary Education is a far cry from my original intended major of molecular biology. I've had quite a few people not fully understand why I want to go into elementary education. They seem to think I'm wasting potential. Whatever.   If I can impart my knowledge onto a new generation of thinkers, I won't consider my potential wasted.

My nephew was homeschooled. His parents owned a decent sized small town business and it just worked out best to homeschool. He is a super intelligent kid who finished his high school work at 16 and is now going to school to be a pharmacy tech. It works for some families, not so for others.

I used to be against homeschooling. I thought they were all socially awkward, ignorant, ill-prepared for the real world, etc. Oh, how wrong was I!
