My dad's losing hope

posted 29th Jan
2 weeks ago my dad went to the hospital for what he thought would just be another pointless test. He's been having abdominal pain for a while now. Went in for test after test finding nothing. Then they finally said it was his gallbladder and took it out. He was still having pain and went back for a test and then they did this last one 2 weeks ago. They ended up finding a blockage in his colon and did emergency surgery that night. Now they're saying it was a tumor but my mom's not saying much to me about anything.

Because he had to get part of his colon taken out and they needed to reconnect anything, he couldn't eat and they needed to pump his stomach and feed him through an IV. He's now starting to eat solid foods again but it keeps making him sick. He says everything repulses him even though they're giving him anti-nausea meds. He's not hungry at all. He's lost so much wight he doesn't even look the same. He's starting to give up hope of leaving the hospital alive. The doctors don't tell my mom or my dad much. Shouldn't they be giving him something to make him hungry?

I just don't know what to do. He's over an hour away and it's putting a stress on my mom, I can barely see him and she goes to see my dad after she works but then no one can watch LO after day care. Has anyone been through anything like this?

My dad started losing weight rapidly very quick. He wasn't eating and was in such pain. He had cancer.

I hope everything turns out okay.

Did they give him anything to make him hungry?

No. He had an IV for a little bit, but ultimately if he didn't want to eat anything we didn't make him.

Is medical marijuana legal there? Or can you just get marijuana for him? That can help with him feeling yucky and the appetite. He doesnt have to smoke it either if he's against that.

He wants to eat. He keeps asking my mom to bring his favorite foods but every time he takes a bite he feels like he's going to throw up and isn't hungry. The only way he can leave the hospital is if he can eat on his own without the IV.

It's not legal and even if he wasn't 100% against it even if it was illegal, it'd be impossible to get it into the hospital.

SO's uncle has throat cancer and is having radiotherapy/chemo he has to be fed through a tube and when he tries to eat properly it is gross to him and he gets really sick. They give him shots for the nausea but he still can't bring himself to eat.

I live with my mom. Honestly, if I didn't live here I think things would be better for everyone.

That's really horrible

Is there a drug they can give him to make him hungry? I didn't know that! Honestly, if he can't eat food in hospital while being helped, going home will probably not be much better. If he feels horrible every time he eats, maybe his body has got to the point that eating makes him sick. My morning sickness is triggered by not eating and then smelling food.

The only thing I could think to suggest is that he perhaps eat very plain foods like crackers or toast until his stomach gets used to digesting food again and then work his way up from there?

If it was legal here, I'd be on it. It sucks that it's not. My dad blames a lot of his problems he's having now on the pain meds but he can't handle it without them.
