re: For what reason would YOU call CPS?

Abuse, neglect, poor/disgusting living conditions.

Dangerous, neglectful things. I've called cops over a guy driving w a dog inside of a crate tied to his roof. I doubt it would take much for me to call when a child is involved. I have never seen or heard of anything to call about though.

I have mandatory reported twice.

One for bruises all over a child's body and an admission from the child that the mother had beaten him with chains.  

Another for a little girl who was stealing food, seemed completely malnourished, and often complained of not getting to eat at home.

Abuse or neglect. What other reason is there to call CPS?

Yeah I didn't think about poor/disgusting living conditions, I would do the same.

She admitted to you that she had beaten her kid with chains!?  

I wouldn't want to call CPS unless there was severe neglect or abuse.

The child told us about it first but the mother did admit to our school counselor that she "didn't know what else to do" and was simply trying to restrain him. She was not all there so I don't quite think she understood what she was admitting.

spanking and pot no. my grandmother was a nurse at a pedi and she said the doc of the child has to be involved in most cases and the docs almost never do anything about spanking. i dont believe in it. i think its emotionally damaging but they wouldnt do anything for that. and as far as the pot... as long as they arent smoking it directly infront of the or blowing it in the childs face then no. they arent hurting anyone.

If the child's health and well being is in danger. Like, real danger. Not because they are putting their 1 yr old forward facing, or they feed their child chicken nuggets for every meal or their house is cluttered.

I'd add endangerment. Driving drunk with the kids in the car (obviously cops should be called for drunk driving anyway), leaving dangerous objects (loaded guns, knives, etc) withink children's reach.

See, that kind of thing pisses me off. Families have been split apart for ridiculous things - CPS have taken kids for mothers insisting on home birth (after court ordered c-sections, how can you even order such a thing?) and breastfeeding photos. I couldn't care less if someone's kids look grubby or if the parents want a glass of wine or an occasional joint as long as the kids are happy and loved. Kids get dirty. Kids rough-house and get bruises, too. It's if they're clearly underfed or always have unexplained injuries or are fearful of adults that you have to worry.

Spanking and using marijuana are NOT reasons to call. Do you know how many GOOD parents lose their kids because of marijuana simply because it's illegal? I would do anything to use marijuana without being scared I'd lose my kids. It's by far the best treatment for my RA and wouldn't give me side effects. But I can't risk it personally. It's stupid I can take all the percocet my dr prescribes but god forbid I eat a pot brownie!
