cutting teeth early is bad?

posted 29th Jan
a friend of a friend and i were talking about our kids, i mention dd cut her first tooth when she was 5 1/2 months and another a week later. she said her youngest hasnt yet and is 9 months... i asked if she used baby oragel because my doctor said it prolongs the teething process. she said thats why she uses it because getting teeth early is good for them? babies arent supposed to get their first tooth until their 10-11 months?! WHAT! has anyone ever heard this?

She sounds like an idiot. There is nothing, no research at all, to show that a child getting teeth early is bad. Some babies are born with teeth.

She's a dumbass. Oracle doesn't slow down teething. It's pointless, yes. But why would anyone think it slowed a tooth from growing in? Secondly, getting teeth early can cause a higher risk of cavities, just because the teeth are exposed to more milk for a longer period of time. But every child gets teeth when they're supposed to. Sounds like that girl was pulling smurf out her ass to try and make her babe look better

Actually, Orajel can harden gums and slow the teething process, that much she's right about. It's one of the reasons it's no longer recommended for use in babies. But it's not bad for babies to teethe early.

Really? I called it pointless just because I recall some articles about it actually causing more pain during teething, but I wasn't sure why. That must be it. And yah all babies do get teeth when they're supposed to, but I think it's alot harder for SOME parents to take care of a younger infants teeth the same way they would if they were older. Like brushing their teeth before bed would be difficult if they were still feeding at night, kwim? And it's not recommended to start fluoride toothpaste until one.

This drives me smurfing nuts. Getting teeth early doesn't mean anything. DS at 21 months has ALL his teeth except 2 of his 2 year molars and had 16 of the 18 he has before he was 14 months old and his teeth are fine. The longer they have teeth the greater the risk for cavities, but if you take care of them there's nothing to worry about. When DS started getting teeth my mom would always say, "Oh, he's probably gonna have bad teeth like you did because they came in early." and it PISSES me off. I have bad teeth because she never smurfing brushed them when I was a baby and she never made me brush them growing up. That was a habit I had to teach myself as a teenager after I already lost 2 teeth because she never taught me I needed to brush them daily and she never once took me to the dentist until 2 of my molars caved and i was in so much pain I couldnt function. They're fine now but it took a lot of dentistry and bad habit breaking.

Most starter toothpastes don't have flouride. DD's 17 months and she uses a non-flouride toothpaste.   She's had teeth since about 7 months, we've been brushing them since then. Baby teeth seem to be pretty resilient, lol.

I know training paste doesn't have flouride. Now it is recommended to start flouride toothpaste at age one. And use training toothpaste before age one.

I didn't know that! Now I won't feel so bad about getting DD some actual toothpaste! Her pedi and dentist said that she didn't need it and that the training toothpaste was enough, but I've been thinking about getting it anyhow. I was wondering if the flouride would be ok for her though.

RIGHT! when she said that it was as if i offended her by telling her about oragel... and her bf stepped in and said "didnt you other kids get teeth early.". she seemed a little shocked he said that so she just felt threatened or something.
