question about neutering a cat

posted 29th Jan
Our kitty is in need of being neutered soon (7 months old) he is inside and I don't want him to start spraying...I got a certificate to help pay for the surgery but on the paper it says it doesn't cover costs of check ups or anything and it also says it doesn't cover the cost of pain killers or antibiotics.
Can anyone tell me if they are supposed to give those to you after your cat gets fixed? How much did they cost? Do they keep the cat over night or what?
I will obviously find out soon as I am calling to make the appointment today, just wondering if anyone can tell me their experiences. Also, how long until your cat healed? What were they like while healing?

I have to get mine neutered soon... he's almost 7 months as well. So let me know how much the pain medication is   You also have to pay for the anesthesia. At least I will (dunno if your coupon thing covers that).

And they do keep them over night, I know that much.

Your cat is a male so surgery should be relatively inexpensive. I wouldn't say more than $50. That's without the surgery. Your cat will be sedated for the surgery. Like knocked out cold. In my experience your cat will not get pain killers. You will be able to pick up your cat the same day. He will be sleepy but will most likely be back to his normal self the next day. I have volunteered at multiple low-cost spay/neuter clinics. You may be able to find one in your area if the cost of surgery with your certificate is still more than you can afford.

Ugh, I hope this doesn't end up being too much, its not really a vets office I don't think..its an animal care center. If they don't use the anesthesia then I will not let them do it..I don't think they could do that though? The certificate says it makes it 25 dollars..and a lot is going on right now that is costing us money so I hope it doesn't get too high. I am worried if we wait until taxes he may start spraying by then.

Why would they not need pain killers?   Have you ever had a surgery and not wanted/needed pain killers?

The certificate makes it 25 dollars but I'm not sure about extra charges. But I can definitely do 25, just not the 80-90 that it usually is. I would be able to once we are doing a little better with money but not right now and he needs it done pretty soon.

I've assisted in 100's of spay/neuters. They do NOT get pain killers.

As long as you don't have other animals, he shouldn't spray. They usually only start spraying if another animals scent is in the house, so they start marking their territory. My cat's about the same age as yours and he has shown no interest in spraying. I'm waiting until I get my taxes back to get it done... because I also have to get his shots, and get him declawed. So total it will be about $300

Every shelter/clinic I've talked to says they prescribe pain killers. I will be giving my cat pain killers... it's inhuman not to. I couldn't imagine having my reproductive organs removed and NOT getting pain killers. Just because they can't vocalize pain, doesn't mean they aren't in pain.

Dropped our cat off before work and picked her up after. Cost 30 bucks for everything. No pain killers. She was loopy when first coming home and hid under the couch for a while.

I'm sure it will probably be just 25. I can't imagine being charged more than that with a certificate. Literally, a neuter surgery takes 10 minutes.

Ugh I just don't see why they wouldn't give pain killers? Seems kind of mean to me...I feel like they would be hurting..

Good for you? I'm just telling her how it has always worked for the clinics I have done. Different areas, different practices I suppose.

But they can vocalize pain. The place we're going to doesn't prescribe them either, I don't think. It's just a healing cut, I thought
