I think it is pretty apparently that you are the odd one out when it comes to having pain killers and antibiotics neuters. Maybe they are just trying to make more money off of you. It's seriously NOT common.

Even the low-cost shelters say this   So no, they aren't trying to make more money. I've talked/looked up both vet clinics and shelters, and they all prescribe pain killers and antibiotics.

Well apparently your area of the country is different in this practice. I'm not saying its bad. I just think it is odd. I don't think the rest of the country is "inhumane."

Weird. Either way, I'm getting the pain killers and antibiotics. Even if he won't be in much pain, I really won't be able to tell since he can't tell me... other than biting me, and he does that anyways... so I can't really differentiate normal behavior from pain

Quoting kthx.:" The places I've talked to, they keep him overnight. But I guess that's because they take extra care ... [snip!] ... a low-cost neuter/spay thing going on, and it said to drop the cat off at 7:30-8am, and pick them up the next day by 10am."

My cat stayed over night too. They hated me for a few hours after I picked them up the next day

I would say if you had an appointment it would be a few hours. Because they will have to wait for the cat to wake up from sedation. But you would have to ask the vet that you are taking it to to be sure. Because as someone elsepointed out. Apparently some vets go above and beyond. haha

He would be vocal about it if he was in pain.

I'm gonna have to do it when I'll have a day off (like for the next day when I bring him home). One of the people at an office I talked to said he probably won't need the collar thing, because cats don't normally lick the incision site like dogs do... but I just want to keep an eye on him for the day afterwards.

He's gonna be so pissed. We tried the Kitty Cap things to keep him from scratching (didn't work, hence why declawing is a must now)... but he kept trying to use his claws to climb up the couch, and just fell off   Poor thing.

He's already vocal, that's the thing. He's been a super vocal cat since we brought him home at 6 weeks old. He talks to me   So like I said, I won't be able to differentiate.. because what you guys are saying he'll be showing if he's in pain, is already his normal behavior.

I'm sure he'll be howling if it's awful, instead of just meowing at me... but I just don't want to take the chance. It makes my stomach churn to think of him not having pain killers.

Quoting kthx.:" No antibiotics, either?! What the hell kind of clinic do you work at?! "
ok not that you need my resume but I worked at one clinic in AZ and 2 here in CA one of them is a higher end clinic. A male cat only need antibiotic if he is licking at the surgery sight. If a cat is vocalizing pain then we will provide pain meds, but in 99% of cases a male cat will heal with no problems. A female cat on the other hand has is going to go home with antibiotics and pain medications because it is a more invasive surgery. In most clinics male neuters don't even get sutures anymore.

Yeah they didnt mess with the stitches at all. You could barely see where they were anyways.
When I took them I thought I was taking a male and a female. The vet laughed and said Kitty had small balls. I couldnt change his name so he was a boy named Kitty
