smoke around baby's toys;

posted 29th Jan
I'm so smurfing furious. When DS was born my SO's side of the family gave us a hard time with no more smoking inside the house. It took for our son to be almost 3 months old before it completely ended.

In those 3 months we did catch FIL smoking an early morning cigg in the living room, around all the baby's stuff. It turned into a huge fight and he never did it again. Until now.

Since SO has been on 3rd shift, his dad has been sneaking a cigg in the living room, where all the baby's toys and things are. along with the remotes and the carpets which LO likes to put in his mouth and crawl on. I just found this out today.

I'm smurfing livid. For the past month, FIL has been doing this and I didn't know. Which means LO has been playing and putting smoke toxin toys in and around his mouth, paying on smokey carpet, and putting smoke toxin'd remotes in his mouth.

MIL does understand, but said "please try to remember he is a little slow and doesn't always thing what he is doing."

I DON"T GIVE A SmUrf!@#$^&%##!@ we told you to stop doing it ONCE! that should be enough. what gives you the right to smoke around your grandchild's toys after I contemplated moving out the first time and you begged me to stay.

what sane individual think that's okay? we have a small living room so it is probably on everything. Now I have to take my time away from school and studying for my exam tomorrow to wash and clorox every single one of DS's toys. and he has many, many, many toys. along with his carseat that I leave in the living room, and some blankets and clothes.

I'm so angry I don't even want to live here anymore. This is really the law straw for me.

Assuming he was probably smoking in that house for YEARS before your LO came, it's really no use. The smoke toxins are in that carpet, couches, etc forever now.

we've gotten new carpets since LO was born and they recently bought new furniture covers as well.

We really don't have enough saved yet to get our own pace. We tried a few months ago and it didn't work and we had to resume living here.

Idk how to take this. No one is making a big deal of it but me.

Plus, it really is their house. They shouldn't be told what to do in their home. I am all for not smoking around baby and baby items but, it is their home.

that would be nice if we had enough $$. we're so in debt with hospital bills and other bills alone that our only option is to live here, or fail again miserably living on our own. I'm serious begging my parents to let us live there. Or me at least.

and I totally understand that. but they begged for us to live here when I first had LO. literally begged for weeks since we were so broke at the time due to the hospital bills. I understand it's their home. But this is their grandchild, and we gave them the terms of no smoking if they really want us to live here, and he agreed with no problem.

if it was his house, and he wanted to smoke in it - then he shouldn't have asked to still live here when we told him no if you smoke.

how the smurf do I even go about cleaning all this stuff properly? clorox good enough?

the sad thing is, SO JUST steam cleaned the carpets last weekend. It took him 2 days and it was a lot of work. all for nothing.

I hate to sound crass but, time to pull up the adult boot straps and make it happen. Where there is a will there is a way. Hospitals don't care how much you pay as long as you make a regular payment. Someone might need to pick up a second job for a while to get some extra money saved up. There are other means to get out on your own. I was a manager at an apartment complex many moons ago. I would work with people on their deposits all the time. If I had a unit coming open in a few months and a couple wanted it, I would give them those few months to make payments to the deposit to secure the unit until it opened basically holding it for them. There are ways to make things happen. You just have to check your standards and live within your means.

hmm that actually gave me a good idea when I call to look for places. I just don't know what to do now. I know SO is going to want to let it go after a fight with him and move on. But it's just going to happen again. Smoke is no joke when it comes to my kid. He had a wheeze when he was an infant, and I swear it was from the smoke in the house in the beginning. He is prone to asthma and I don't want my kid touching and playing with smurf that's going in his mouth if it has smoke on it.

I'm full time in school, and it just worked out perfectly that MIL would watch LO for me when I go, if we do move out - I have to figure something else out. But I'll do whatever for a healthy living environment for my kid.

Yeeah... I'm sorry, but I agree. It's their home and you're a guest. You don't really have a right to tell them what to do inside their own home. Maybe you could keep the babies toys somewhere besides the living room? This sounds like something that should have been considered in greater detail before you moved in.

And I also just read that you two smoke as well....
So, do you smoke in the car (even with the windows down)? Hold LO in the same clothes you smoked in?
