Need advice on what to do with my 5 year old step son

posted 29th Jan
He got written up at VPK for spitting on his teachers, taking his shoes off and throwing them, screaming, giving other parents the finger when they came to pick up their children, and showing his privates to classmates.

So just to give you a ittle back round information about him:
My fiance and I got full custody of him when he was 2 1/2 before that he was mistreated by his drug abbuising mother and ended up being taken from her and placed with her mother. He has had behavior problems on and off . He does great for a while and then acts up again. My fiance works long hours so I am there having to deal with him and his behavior. I am at my wits end and think there might be something really wrong with him. He acts up and just a week ago he kept peeing his pants after being potty trained since 3 - 3 1/2. He would just stand in his classroom and just pee in his pants. He wouldn't even try to make it into the bathroom. He would just do it and sit in it. So its not like he just had a little accident.
Please any advice would be greatly appreciated.........I want to help my son!

Have you thought about getting him in therapy?

This was my first thought. Behavior issues at this age are generally related to a deeper issue. He isn't "naughty", so to speak. He could have other problems that aren't diagnosed. He might even have some SN's that haven't been diagnosed or addressed. This type of behavior comes out of frustration. Try to remember that.

You need to talk to the school social worker. She will have ideas to help you & him control his emotions.

My son has some similar issues. He gets very upset & emotional. He has scratched himself till he bleeds, bitten himself until he is bruised. When that happens he loses tv for the day. We talk about what happened & why he shouldn't hurt himself. We have sent in a stress ball to distract him from self injury. The school has a 6week program he is joining next week to help him cope.

I have been saying he has needed therapy since we first got him. Its not normal some of the things he does, but my fiance kinda has blown it off,and is jus now getting the big picture. That kids act up here and there, but not like this.

Well hopefully he will understand more now.. I hope things get better for him.

I am not a dr in any way and i am just throwing out an idea...

but if i were you i would google adhd in toddlers and children and read some articles and see if that sounds like him. My daughter is only 3 1/2 so she has not been diagnosed but her ped wants to begin the process of it at 4 i guess there is a lot to it when there young, i know this sounds NUTTS to an outsider but she literally will not color will not sit and read books doesnt listen to anything i say the fits she throws are outrageous and it doesnt matter what i do. i have been consistant since day one with punishments. its as bad as a daycare not being able to keep her due to it. with that being said IDC if the diagnose her with it all i want is somone to help me cope with it obviously taking care of a child with adhd is differnt than a child without i will NOT put her on meds unless she HAS to later on. so now that i have rambled i would just check it out. i personally feel like something that happend to him 3 years ago he wouldnt be acting out on now because he is so young and was very young when it happend. AGAIN IM NOT A DOCTOR just my thought

It does sound like adhd bc like you I have researched it a million times but.....the thin that gets me is he doesn't always do it. He can be good so it kinda shows me he can control it somewhat.

This sounds like you need some help from a behavior specialist and/or therapist.

Thats how my daughter is as well she can literally be throwing a fit on the floor in a store and the next be the sweetest thing. she is very very veyr smart but to try and get her to sit there and learn a thing YA RIGHT! she just picks up on everything to the point were we have pretended not to be talking to her and have our own "coversation" whether it be spelling her name or counting. she took my cell phone and hid and i searched for 5 DAYS and she acted like she had no idea and then on the 5th day i said okay ry where is it, im done looking i cant find it anywhere, she ran right up to my cable box, yeap she hid it right behind it. she can sing most of the pretty little liars song tell me what show it is anddd copies aria at the end idk if you watch it but its not a show she even watches she literally saw the opening song i think twice. she knows not to hit or bite or any of that she literally gets upset with herself and has cried to me for hitting me before but she just cant control it. poor kid you can literally see it in her facial expressions when theres just TOO much going on and she doesnt know what to react to. its a long road its not like you go into a drs appt and come out and there diagnosed i guess theres psychiatrists and behavioral therapists they have to work with and whatnot but its something to look into.
