Potty training.. It's that time :(

posted 29th Jan
I need some serious advice on potty training!! I obviously have never potty trained a toddler before because this is my first baby & I am so confused on what works. My daughter will be 2 this month. Which I'm even confused on what the perfect age is to start and when to expect her to really try to do it. She does so well with going #2 in the potty IF I catch her in the act. Like I can tell if she has to go and I just say do you need to go to the Elmo potty and I go with her but I have to kind of watch her because she's not patient enough to keep sitting. Eventually she will go. After I try putting panties on her and telling her if you have to go potty you have to go to the Elmo potty because you dont have a diaper on. But she always ends up peeing wherever she is sitting. My MIL keeps telling her "you need to be going to the potty your too big". But Is she really? I think she doesn't understand how to hold her pee in my opinion. Any advice??

She's actually young to start training and its hopeless if her body isn't mature enough to realize when she has to go and hold it. Sounds like what you've been doing catching her in the act is just luck.

the best thing I learned about potty training...is if its not working, its not going to work!

I tried 2 times with my son in his second year and it just wasnt working, so I stopped, sure enough when he was about 2 years 8 months....he just went and has been going ever since.

My daughter is 20 months old and wants to train. I don't feel it's too early to get her trained.

Just try taking her every 5 - 10 minutes until she pees on the potty. That's how I had to start. Eventually they start holding it longer. She may regress and not to pee on the potty but she may just train fast as well.

She's pretty young. My boys' pedi doesn't even start PT'ing her kids till they're 3 (we got on the sub because DS#1 is almost fully trained (night)). Tell your MIL to pipe the smurf down lol

The average age for a child to potty train is between 3 and 4 and pushing it too ealry will cause serious long term issues with potty training. Some studies even show it will cause issues later on sexually. I think try not to push it right now, she's so young. But encourage it if she shows interest.

And tell your mil to ease off, your daughter is not too big to wear a diaper.

Your daughter shows an interest and willingness to train. From op's post it doesn't sound like her daughter does.

Thanks for the replies. Makes me feel better that she is still a little young. My MIL just likes to compare my daughter to her other grandchild WAY too much. She's always like Caroline was potty trained by this age. But I know good and well she was still in pull ups when she turned two. But, oh well. She does seem interested sometimes but not to where she actually goes on her own just out of the blue unless she sees the potty or if I ask her. I haven't been pushing it or anything. She just is a really advanced toddler(she can talk in full sentences and actually have a conversation with you) so I thought she may train a little earlier.

That doesn't really have a thing to do with readiness to trian though. The don't cej have the ability to identify the sensation of needing to go it the muscle control to hold it until between 2 and 3 typically. My son was speaking in full sentences and writing his name by 18 months and didn't train until his third birthday.

Ya she has shown interest since 16 months. Just have been going with the flow and not pushing it. She has been in panties for a week now.

I did what I told her to do with my eldest son to get him to per and reward the fact that they did it. But of course if they aren't ready they won't fully potty train.
