Breaking a fever?

posted 29th Jan
Is there anyway to break a fever quicker or is it just a wait it out thing? My daughter has the flu and has been running a 103 fever since Sunday. I've been trying to push fluids but she's not really having it.She's getting enough that she's not dehydrated though. Also she has now had her 4th dose of tamiflu. Just hoping she starts feeling better soon. I've been letting her fever pretty much go so it can help her fight off this crap.

How old is she? has it been constant? I'd generally let a fever run for 3 days, and be giving probiotics and high dose sodium ascorbate

My husband always wraps himself up in tons of blankets and clothes and takes a nap. He calls it "sweating it out" and it works every time. I don't know how safe it is on a child, though... lol

103 needs to be lowered. Fighting a fever is like 101. I'd take her back in to the dr to make sure she is not dehydrated or gotten worse.

Have you tried Tylenol and Motrin. Giving those staggered usually will due the trick.

Oops worded that wrong_ the 103 is not really fighting whatever she has its too high for long periods of time. Try some Motrin and that will help lowere it

Skin to skin. The old cool bath recommendation is actually bad for fevers. Making their bodies cooler confuses the immune response and can raise the fever. Skin to skin will help them regulate their temperature to yours. That being said, fevers are your friend! I understand how you feel though, it's sad watching them suffer! Unless they are seriously uncomfortable I don't ever like to treat fevers. Even with a virus that is typically unaffected by a fever, I don't want to interfere with their immune system and potentially inhibit their future immune responses.

That's exactly how I feel. I avoid treating fevers because it's their bodies natural response to the illness. I know what she has and I know it can be a long-lived thing. I'll have to try their skin to skin. I know I can do tylenol and motrin but that won't truly break the fever, just make it go away temporarily.
