Is solitary confinement in prison torture?
I am watching Law and Order SVU where Elliot goes to solitary for 3 days because the guy who tried to kill him was using the fact he was in there for 14 years.

I definitely don't think it's productive-I think prison should be more about rehabilitation and less about punishment.

Mental torture. It really messes with a persons mind. Pretty sure its illegal to keep someone in solitary for extended periods of time (not sure exactly what the limit is)

Charles Manson has been in solitary most of his prison stay (I am pretty sure all of it). And a friend works in a state prison in Ohio he said child molesters usually have to spend long periods of time in solitary for their own protection.

I think that solitary confinement is effective to a certain degree - especially if the person poses a direct threat to the people around them. There comes a point, however, where it seems that the solitude will make a worse situation by mentally harming the prisoner and potentially to others.
