still having BF issues..
posted 28th Jan
My son is a month old today and I'm still having severe nipple pain. Lactation consultants have said his latch is fine. His natal tooth barely pokes through and I'm using a shield still. It feels like razors cutting through my nipple. Once in a while it doesn't hurt at all. I'm so confused..the cracks are healing but then everytime they're almost gone I BF and it seems to make them come back..
Also LO has not pooped in going on 3 days. He eats plenty and I'm aware breast milk is a natural laxative. He is very gassy as well. I have looked up overactive letdown but he's not pooping at all? Any thoughts?

There is very little waste with breastmilk its perfectly normal for a BF baby to go up to 10 days without a movement.

My nipples didn't crack or anything like you're experiencing, but they did hurt quite bad for the first 6 weeks, and then they toughened up, so just push through!
Keep applying lanolin cream, or even just coconut oil, to your nipples to help with the cracking.
It's totally normal for a breastfed baby to go days without pooping.

The coconut oil, does that need to be removed before BF
And I really hope this pain does stop. My WIC breastfeeding counselor said she had cracks and pain until 6 weeks as well, so I'm starting to wonder if this "first 2 weeks is the hardest" is true or just a bear minimum that they tell ya lol

Yes I would rinse off the coconut oil before nursing again just to be on the safe side. And gassiness is normal too!

I hear ya! My boy will be 4 weeks on Friday. My nipples KILLED in the beginning but have gotten better... I think because this is my 2nd baby. But with my daughter I had a horrible time the whole 10 months I breastfed. After you nurse let your nipples air dry. You can also express a little breast milk and rub it on your nipple... It is a natural healer. Also, you can try taking a cool wet cloth after you nurse and wipe your nipple off to get some of your babies germs off. Every time you nurse use lanolin and a lot of it! Keep your breast pads changed and dry as possible. Wet nipples causes more irritation. You can also try to latch ur baby on in different positions. The cross cradle hold is less painful for me. Keep with it sweetie things will get better and so worth it!

I've tried all positions, even the laid back position. None of it changes and my left seems to be worse than my right side imost of the time. The lanolin didn't help much and kind of stung. I have the medela brand, maybe it has to do with that?
I asked WIC about an electric pump as well and the BF counselor never addressed my request. If this doesn't change I'm not going to be able to keep up. I was near tears today :/ I'll try the air dying though!

Yes try the lansinoh brand... That's what I use and its more natural. I also hear cool tea bags can help sooth after you nurse. They also sell cooling packs in the breast feeding section that I hear helps too. If you can get a pump that will help your nipples have a bit more rest. Just remember when baby latches on make sure he opens his mouth as wide as possible. And if he doesn't break the latch and start over. I know when my baby latches on wrong it hurts so much more. Breast feeding is so much work sometimes isn't it?!
