Ear tubes? Mommas who have had babies/children get them.. lo

posted 28th Jan
My son who is 7 months old got his ear tubes in today! I was freaking out about the anesthesia but it was so quick and he was fine when he came back in (aside from the tummy ache)
Anyway, the surgeon said it was one of the worst cases he'd seen and that his ears looked terrible. I feel so bad my son had to go through that. I KNEW he had problems with his ears, I took him in constantly for this, but my pedi and other doctors said his ears looked fine. Granted, the infected fluid was behind his ear drum and it's not like they could see it, but still. I wish they would've listened to my concerns sooner. Anyway, mommas that have children with tubes, did it help them a lot? My son is already a GREAT baby and so happy, but has had a lot of nights with zero sleep (for him and myself) and some nights that for him were "good". So will this hopefully help him sleep better? Did it help your children? I love the kid to death but the half hour of waking every night is starting to wear on me! I'd do it forever if I needed to but for his sake and my own I hope this helps him, most importantly, but also me and my hubby's sleep! TIA.

My son has had two sets of tubes. Both times, it was a big difference in comfort and therefore attitude.

Yes they helped my son a lot. If he is having a lot of trouble I would get them done! My son was acting normal a hour after they were done.

I actually am on disability because of my ears. I have had tubes in and out and both my ear drums replaced and now I am at risk for another surgery because the tube in my right ear is in trouble because my ear drum is starting to grow over the tube which will require surgery. I have been through this since I was a baby.

I had tubes when I was 4 and 6, I remember the incidents well and like your son I had such a bad case the first doctor I had been seeing before my parents switched, had his license taken away. I didn't have trouble with sleeping so that didn't change but I do remember it making a world of difference with my pain, infections, hearing and stomach upset (it's hard to eat properly when chewing hurts)

I haven't had to go through this with my children but as a child my brother had terrible, terrible ears. We were always at the doctors because of it. Getting tubes put in was the best decision. Even as a young child, I was maybe 10 at the time, I saw the difference in him. He slept better and the change in behavior was pretty drastic, too. If I remember correctly, doctors were talking to my mother and his father about him potentially being special needs, but it all stemmed from his ears. To my knowledge, he hasn't had any serious problems since he was a kid, though he's told me that he can't go too far under water because of them or something along those lines.

They weren't concerned about special needs with my son, but he had severe hearing loss before the first surgery and perfect hearing after.

We had to do a second surgery with adenoids removal, but it has been totally worth it.

Them thinking he was special needs stemmed from hearing issues. He had a lot of trouble communicating (he was also severely tongue tied and couldn't talk well until operated on for that, too, and attending speech therapy) and between the difficulties he had with all of that, it also made him get frustrated and act out.
