transitioning to "sippy cup"

I went to Janessa's WIC appointment today. The Lady said her checks will only cover whole milk by her first birthday and to start around 2 weeks before her first birthday to get things going along. Also she said by her first birthday to toss the bottle. My DD is not having a sippy cup now. Ive tried a few different brands but no success. Any good brands that you mamas had luck with?

Also, my daughter has no interest in holding her own bottle. She knows how to I assure you, she just wont.

Any Ideas? experiences ? TIA  

I don't even know what brand I buy. I just go for whatever is cheaper, but won't leak.

I threw all the bottles away (Both times) the day after the 1st birthday.

Made it to where the kids didn't have a choice but to use a sippy cup.

As far as getting your LO to hold it? I would just make sure it is always accessible to your LO this way if they get thirsty she will be able to just pick her cup up and drink whenever.

My daughter only likes the sippy cups with handles on the side. She didn't start holding her bottle until about 9 months. You just have to keep trying. I would sit her bottle next to her and if she really wanted it she would take it and feed herself. Now she does it like a pro.

Firstly, screw WIC. Don't let them tell you how to feed or raise your child, they are not doctors.

Secondly, my daughter didn't want anything to do with a sippy cup til she was almost 18 months old. So don't push it, she'll learn it when she does.

i do that with her bottle. I know she knows how to hold it because I've seen her do it in the past, around 5-6 months. She is now 9 months. Rather then pick it up and take a drink she will just scream until shes hyper ventilating so I can pick the bottle up and feed her.

Awe that is what my DD did. She just liked when I fed her. Now she refuses to let me lol. She is 11 months.

SO thinks we should toss the bottles at one, I feel its a bit harsh. I do agree she should be off the bottle, but not toss them all. What if she doesn't transition? I don't want her to starve

Wic nurses are barely trained in what they do. Wic is a joke, lol.

If you want to toss them at one, go ahead. That's what I eventually had to do with my DD. She won't starve. She will learn that she has to drink from what you give her.

For the transition, I found that Nuk sippy cups with the soft silicone spout worked best for my DD, like these:

well that's good to know! lol. I like that one, looks different from the ones Ive bought already. Its frustrating because they are like 5-9 bucks a piece and when she doesn't use them its like ugh! what a waste that's a pack of wipes!

Oh yeah, trust me. I've got a cabinet full of old sippy's that my DD didn't like. Luckily my youngest is the least picky child that ever lived, so I just bought the $3 munchkin ones for him from Walmart  

Once my daughter learned how to drink from that nuk one, she easily transitioned to the Munchkin types, then the hard spouts.
Just don't get discouraged if she doesn't get it right off the bat. She's still young, and even at a year, she's still basically a baby.

My dr. told me as long as they're off the bottle by 2 yrs, everything will be fine.

I love these Nuk ones, my four month old uses one once in awhile, I gave it to him once just for the heck of it and he loved being able to hold the handles and bring itn to his mouth.

I wouldn't put too much stock into what WIC says, sometimes the ones here even contradict my pedi.I take it as advice and decide what to take and what to leave. Yes, it would be nice if your DD was off the bottle by one, but you haven't ruined her life if she's not. My oldest DS was off the bottle by nine moths, but that's because that's when HE was ready. He simply refused the bottle one day. Take it one day at a time and don't act like your stressed over her holding her bottle or transitioning and she'll eventually get it. Good luck!

Yea I guess so, even pedi's I take and leave some, cause at the end of the day shes my child. I haven't stirred her wrong yet. Im a pretty good mom if I do say so myself!

I'm just not gonna do what my mother did. I was on a pacifier till 3ish, and the bottle to almost 3.
