unschooling

posted 28th Jan
If you unschool how does it work with the law? Do you work part time?how do you help your child to learn? Are there special things out there to help educate them? What kinds of things do you want them to learn? Can they go to college? Public school when they are older if they want to? When did you start? Do you have multiple kids and how does that work? Are you involved with other families? Anything else you wanna tell me...

I am really considering this and so is a friend of mine.

And why would you want to un-school them?

Isn't it illegal to not have kids in some type of school? At least find someone that can home school them or it is more likely to be difficult for them to get back into school later on

I would probably go with a homeschool and not the full un-schooling. Many homeschool curricula allow for a wider range of subjects. One in my area offers Chinese, and other classes that a regular school(private or public) doesn't offer.

Because I don't believe in the public school system. The cuts they have made are ridiculous. Cutting art and recess and sometimes pe. It is just a social disaster IMO. I want to raise children with free minds and well rounded. in schools they memorize facts to take tests rather than learning ways to function in real life.

You can educate your child yourself. It doesn't have to be someone else.

I've only read up on the subject some, I'm no expert. My daughter's only 3... but...

You have to declare that you're home schooling. Different states have different rules for home schoolers. Some have to take tests periodically, some just have to submit a portfolio, etc.

I'm a SAHM but you could do it if you worked part time since most schooling can be done in half the time a traditional school would take.

I'm sure there are programs and other online sources to help you, but the point of unschooling is to NOT have a curriculum, but to teach based on the student's interests.

They can go to college, in fact I heard a lot of colleges LOVE home schoolers/unchoolers. They'd have to get their GED in some states, some states allow home schoolers to graduate with their class. Then they'd have to take the SAT/ ACT and can get into college that way.

You can send them to public school if they want, but it probably would take some transition, especially if they were younger. The older they were it'd probably be easier.

I have a child on the way but I'd imagine it'd be the same as home schooling multiple children.

You pretty much have to be involved with other families if only for the social aspect. They could also get involved with sports, music, etc for social interaction.

Are you a trained teacher though? Do you have any experience with teaching and learning development? Do you truly believe you are more adept at teaching your children to read, write, do math, learn history and social studies, than a teacher who has been trained to do so?

The public school system needs definite improvements, but your children won't become mindless drones from attending.

Honestly I didn't post this for criticism. But no I am not a teacher. A child who is unschooled doesn't necessarily learn all of that. It's up to them to decide what they want to learn. It is actually a big thing and many people do it. Especially in other countries. I'm sure there is help out there for parents. That's what this post is for, not to debate if it's an okay choice what I do with my kids.

They learn what they want to learn? o_O

Right, good luck with that.

There are a LOT of home schooling families, and I'm sure most of them aren't teachers. Their children grow up well rounded, go on to college, and become functioning members of society.

Not all children taught by teachers learn. Not all children taught by teachers graduate or go to college or become functioning members of society...

Just because you don't have a degree doesn't mean you can't teach your child to learn. From there they can learn whatever they want.

That being said... why did I bother typing up my long helpful response only to be ignored. x-x

I disagree with homeschooling unless you have a degree in education. I always will. *shrug*

That's fine. You can have your opinion and we can have ours.
