Any mommies who smoke and breastfeed?

posted 28th Jan
I have extreme anxiety so not smoking drives me crazy. I never smoked when I was pregnant, and even went a good 3 weeks after DS was born before smoking one again... I don't ever crave cigarettes, it's just something I've gotten into the habit of doing again. Ugh. I NEVER do it around DS, EVER. And I get so frustrated when we have to walk by people smoking walking into his doctors, the store, anything. I don't want him around smoke AT ALL.
so my question is this!
How long do you wait after you smoke to breastfeed, and how many do you smoke a day?

I wait an hour after I smoke in the morning, pump, then toss out, and by the next time he's ready to eat, it's been almost 3 hours (he eats every 4).

My pedi said it was fine to smoke and breastfeed if I waited long enough in between, and is actually better for him to breastfeed if I smoke than if I didn't *it protects him against ear &respiratory infections*... but I'm still nervous. Would just like a little input!

I smoke after the kids go to bed, when DS was little I'd BF him, set him in my bed or his rocker and step out for a few minutes, when I was done just jump in the shower to rinse off the smell

I wouldn't bother pumping and dumping. Breast milk is like your blood, things filter out of it over time, making dumping unnecessary.

You don't need to pump & dump with smoking. It's a huge waste of milk.

Don't pump and dump. Just have a shower and brush your teeth after every smoke.

I smoked while BFing my first and the nurse told me to wait at least 30 minutes, but she never said anything about needing to dump.

personally i would wait at least 30 mins after, in a well ventilated area (like outside) but my mother didnt with either of us 6 kids and none of us have any respiratory or ear problems, or health problems in general. My dad never thought about even stepping away from us and would often smoke with us in the same room (but never while holding us). back then less was known of the risks, and maybe we are all just lucky but the odds are that you should be fine with what you are doing, minus the pump and dump, that one is a bit of a waste.

I smoke outside AWAY from baby man! My mother also smoked around me...I couldn't stand it

No more dumping then! I will just continue doing what I'm doing! Thank you ladies!!

You don't have to pump and dump. The smoke on your clothes would be worse for baby, but I'm sure you go outside or something so there's nothing to worry about

I smoke, 1 cigarette a day. It's the last one that is the hardest one to quit.

Nicotine goes in the bloodstream so pump&dump is useless.
1 cigarette on average has about 5 mg of nicotine in it, which goes into your bloodstream. Note that the effect on baby is increased because of the nicotine to bodymass ratio.

That being said, here are some facts:
Nicotine has a halflife of 60-90 minutes, that means that after 90 mins max. of smoking, the amount of nicotine in your blood is HALVED.
It takes however, about 30 minutes for nicotine to PEAK in your blood.

The recommendation is going as long as possible between the smoke and the next nursing session, so the trick is to smoke right after a nursing session so you have the biggest time lapse.

My DS sleeps from 7pm to 12 pm so I have one right after he goes to bed for example.

Now second hand smoke is much worse, as it lingers in the clothing and such. Always smoke outside, and have a designated smoking jacket or sweater that you use only for smoking, and that stays outside! Smoke travels through the house so if you bring it inside it will circulate.
Tie your hair together or use a cap, hair is the biggest culprit of trapping smoke.
After the smoke, ideally shower and wash your hair, if not possible, brush teeth, wash face, neck (any area exposed to the smoke), wash hands thoroughly (the amount of trace nicotine on the fingers is insane).

All in all it sounds like a hassle and it's better to quit, but dear god I know how hard it is to kick the habit =/
